I already played the story, so you're not spoiling anything. However, allow me to spoil some things of my own during my explanation.

When you check her side mission in which you have to find her diary, you actually find out how messed up her life was. She lived on the streets, has trouble relating to others and stole things to live. Maya found her and decided to give her shelter, but the damage was already done from the start. Ava's relationship with Maya is frail, and her wish to become a Vault Hunter isn't making things any easier. The one time Ava realized that Maya actually cared for her was when Troy killed Maya. Given that Lilith was willing to give Ava a chance, and knowing that everyone looked up to the Firehawk - even when her powers were gone -, I find it honestly relatable that Ava would be pissed that Lilith was powerless to stop the Calypso Twins from taking Maya's powers (and life).

Ava was reacting that way due to how her past shaped her. She was only just starting to trust others, and seeing the one person who she viewed as a friend be killed before her eyes made her lash out at everyone and anyone who could have done something, but didn't - even if we both know that Lilith was in no position to face off against the Calypso Twins again. Moreover, it was Lilith who agreed to let Maya accompany the Vault Hunter after being pressured, so it gives Ava a reason to lash out at Lilith. I'm sure that if you were in her shoes and someone dear to you died with you unable to do anything, you would be pissed at the world for them not being there to save that loved one.

I honestly see Ava as a teenager who learned the hard way and who, after given a chance for a semi-decent life, ends up understanding the concepts of trust, bonds, and comradery, but also loss and death. The fact that she turned a new leaf and learned some humility from that experience probably ended up saving her.

I know a lot of people think that the end of the story was a stretch, but to me, it just means that the torch is passed from the old generation - in this case, the first two generations of Vault Hunters - to the next ones - namely, the third and possibly fourth generation. Given that Lilith was powerless throughout nearly the entire story, she had a lot of time to think of the future - if you talk to her on Sanctuary during the story, you can actually see, hear and tell that she's got a lot on her mind and that she feels like a lead weight for the rest of Sanctuary. The fact that Ava acquired Maya's powers is what I would call a bond between teacher and student. Even Maya KNEW that Ava would become a Siren but was not sure how she knew that or why.

In Niread's Eridium transmissions, you learn that the powers of the Siren are either willingly passed on from one Siren to a likely candidate (giving the idea that Maya knowing Ava's potential could have been the trigger) or that the power is passed down to a random individual (like what happened to Tannis with Angel's powers) after that Siren dies. The only one who has not passed on her powers is Niread herself because of the immense grief of having been the one who locked the Eridians away in their self-made trap to contain The Destroyer - though I don't know how she has been able to keep those powers.

Mainly remembered for getting stabbed & eaten by the Destroyer, then briefly revived by Claptrap's Robot Revolution (including hole from said stabbing).
