It wasn't too unlike him to enter something that was called the „Death run“. Although he was very much aware of the dangers of the dark forest. Probably more so then most others, considering he lived in it and spent a lot of time there. Maybe that was the reason why he decided he should enter. Maybe it was also to somehow proof to Anand that he was in fact worthy and able to represent VRS and the royal guards. But to be completely honest, he just wanted to proof something to himself.
He was mostly retired from participating in any competitions, knowing well his nerves simply weren't made for it. And while he certainly could perform well, he never felt good doing so.
This was different. There wasn't really any competition in the Death run. It was simply about surviving it. Of course he chose Vieteri, his seasoned warhorse and partner for many many years now, over his youngster Skaldi for this particular ride. The young grey was certainly an amazing horse but this was simply a task for a horse like Vieteri. Reliable and well educated and trained. Skaldi had a few more years ahead before being equipped for a ride like this.

Of course he had to get a kiss before heading off, sheepishly and subtly trying to get one from his fiancé. Liam probably noticed right away what the man was up to but was probably also amused by the awkwardness of Aris attempts to steal a kiss. Odd how shy and awkward the bearded man still was, even after years of being together.
Finally Arnleif was able to receive the kiss he needed so badly to ensure good luck and was able to head out. Equipped with warm clothing, a torch, a knife, some rope and a hatchet, the golden stallion and his rider disappeared into the dark forest.

The name was certainly fitting and Arnleif was glad he brought the torch. At first the woods still seemed familiar. He felt home here. But as they got deeper and deeper into the forest, the atmosphere changed, growing more and more hostile and cold. They've been cantering for the most part, although in their usual, controlled and rather collected fashion but something wasn't quite right.

He could feel the hairs in the back of his neck stand up and he was sure that wasn't just because of the cold, damp air. Even Vieteri, an easily excited but fearless horse had started to turn his ears around rapidly, huffing heavily and nervously but as usual, doing whatever his rider asked of him.
He hoped for wolves. Maybe a bear. Or boars. He hoped it would be all of that but he knew better. Vieteri didn't react like that to the usual wildlife. He was used to it, sometimes getting nervous but not snorting and huffing and puffing the way he did now. Arnleif could feel the tension in the horses body building up as well as in his own muscles. This wasn't good. It wasn't good at all.

It was when Arnleif brought the Stallion back into a walk, considering to turn around, when he finally hear it. First behind them, then quickly next to them and then right in front. A single red eye was staring at them. Calmly. Calculating. That wasn't just some savage beast. It was clear from the look in it's eye. Just one eye. The other was missing and unfortunately, Arnleif was the reason for it. He remembered their first encounter vividly with the goat creature attacking Liam and him, Liam shooting it and Arnleif stabbing a knife in it's eye. There was no way this would end well. Even if the creature didn't attack. Not yet. It seemed deliberate and thoughtful in everything it did. Lifting it's claws, pointing at Arnleif but soon bareing it's teeth at him. Still waiting. Arnleif didn't feel like finding out what the creature was waiting for, turning and pulling Vieteri with him. The horse jumped around on a single hind leg and took off in the direction they came from as soon as Arnleif let him. The compact stallion was surprisingly quick, especially around corners and obstacles but unfortunately, he wasn't quick enough.
Without quite realising what happened, horse and rider both went down, plowing into the ground. To Arnleif great worry, Vieteri didn't get up immediately, visibly struggling and kicking, with the torch laying on the ground now it was hard to see and figure out what was happening. He didn't get the chance to either. Whatever has been holding on to Vieteris legs has now moved on to Arnleif, pinning him down and staring at him from one red eye. The message was clear.
Revenge.

The festivities were still going on, people were eating, drinking, dancing and generally having a good time. Waiting for the participants of the death run and celebrating the ones returning.
However the return of a barely conscious rider on a frightened, limping, golden stallion interrupted quite a bit of the celebration, at least the celebration going on near the finish line.
The rest of the ride had been a blur for Arnleif. The creature didn't want to kill him, obvious since he somehow made it back, but considering the state he was in it was a miracle he made it back.
At first Vieteri seemed in a worse condition with a considerable amount of blood smeared on right side of his neck, although when someone finally managed to get closer to the animal to pull the rider off, the source of the blood was revealed to be the mans face.
