Because I like the idea of Germania having been utterly naive when he first met Rome. And getting drunk on wine far too easily. Would Rome really be nice enough not to take advantage?... Actually, there is a part in Tacitus' Germania which (to paraphrase) says "Note - Germans get drunk easily. This could be used to our advantage".
... Germania soon learnt not to let his guard down.

He was a contemporary Roman author/historian who wrote the book Germania all about the region and the Germanic tribes. It's really the only written source we have to go on (bias as it's likely to be) considering the Germans themselves didn't write.
