If you've been watching me for a reeeaaaally long time, you know who Obi is XDIf you're new here, Obi is my Nightmare Before Christmas character, Oogie Boogie's daughter. She's a sack of ramen noodles :> and she's in a Cory and Topanga-esque relationship with Barrel, as you can see.
For years I wondered how I wanted Obi to turn out, whether she decided to follow her father's footsteps or somehow escape Oogie and go do what she wants. I decided recently that I think she'd actually wanna just go be a human (with use of magic, obvs. It's Halloweentown haha). She's not a scary person, she'd probably be happy if she just left Halloweentown and be normal. Not to mention it really makes things less complicated between her and Barrel, lololol.
Oh, and the second Boogie in the top middle there is Hissy Boogie, if you remember her too. I gave her a little re-design a few years ago to make her less like Obi's twin. We also made her Obi's cousin instead. She's filled with snakes.
So yeah, I thought for Halloween I'd do a sketch dump of Nightmare art but on October 1st this was all I ended up doing and that's all I got in the end. One of these days I'll draw more of them, they're some of my favorite characters to draw still...

I was wondering could tell us more about Hissy Boogie did Oogie make her to? Does she have a better relationship with Oogie than her cousin?

So I have some questions..
Did she start out as a baby or just materialized around the same age as the trio since that would be easier to manage for him?
Is there a prominent character trait she inherited from oogie? I saw in one of your posts that she is part of oogie's shadow, in some way, they are related. --from what I've seen of her, she's incredibly shy and scared, not the smartest, gentle and nice/bubbley when she wants to be. I kind of headcanoned that she interested her father's inner cowardlyness and somewhat of his outgoing nature, but she's nice (at least that I know of) I honestly don't know where that came from. I'm pretty sure he raised l,s,b and they're terrible, what's up with her?
Why did oogie make her? So, like, we can kiiind of say that Oogie had lock, shock and barrel and is their surrogate guardian (for me, personally, nah, at least not really) they could be his successors if that's what he's worried about, hell, in the games (ambitiously canon as they are) he calls barrel is "son" and "star pupil"
!!! Why make obi? Was he soul searching? Do you think lock shock and barrel were ever jealous?

Lol thanks for your interest in her!! I'll try to cover as much as I can with your questions without writing a novel:
Firstly, she did not start as a baby... she started out at an age a little younger than the trio. Oogie sewed up a child-sized burlap sack person and brought it to life by taking a piece of his shadow, because in my headcanon the shadow is a Boogieperson's life force. She woke up, able to speak in broken sentences, able to learn to walk fairly quickly, etc. So just a few years further ahead than a human child. Once a little Boogie is taught enough and they can take care of themselves on their own, that's when they sew up a bigger sack and switch over to grow up some more (like a hermit crab, I guess?).
She started out as just an innocent, sweet and calm child, originally just trying to make her dad proud. But Oogie is a terrible father, so in trying to teach her to be more like him, he was impatient with her and angry, which eventually turned into abuse, which sent her in the opposite direction. She became meek and quiet because she found that it got her into less trouble. He began to tell her how useless and disappointing she was, so she just receded further back into her shell and became a wounded, depressed person who believed she would never, ever be good enough for her father. So basically if he was more patient with her, she may have ended up much different, but the "disappointing" way she turned out was all his fault.
I personally don't headcanon that Oogie raised the other three, I think they're just rotten trick-or-treater kids that Oogie recruited. Which honestly Lock and Shock are brats so they probably didn't help Obi's confidence growing up... Barrel is mischievous, but he's also a bit of a sweetheart, and so he was the only one that showed her kindness. That was some positive reinforcement that probably also influenced how she turned out.
As for if he actually passed down any of his traits... She inherited his powers that he shows in the movies and games, minus his vacuum breath. She's also a great performer like he is, so she inherited a great singing voice and good rhythm... that's her more outgoing side for sure. As she gets older she starts to gain more of his confidence, and she begins to lose patience with her dad, standing up for herself... So, Deviantart's mostly seen her as a shy little kid, but she's got growing up to do. She's just a late bloomer.
Why Oogie made her: to be his successor. The trio are merely his henchmen, I personally don't think any of them are gonna get promoted to Boogieman lol.

Yaaaay! Obi! It's been so long since you've drawn her, I really like her ever since I found her somewhere when I was looking for LS&B pics. It led me to your amazing drawings! Glad to see her again. It made me so happy.

1. who's her mother?
2. why Ramen? XD
