Description This was not an unusual feeling, Deep Field thought to herself bitterly.

Despite the fact that she was living a wonderful, charmed existence, and had everything she ever wanted, she still felt like something important was missing.

Well, not missing, but disconnected. Like it had been since she first earned her Mark.

Since that one sunny day during her childhood, Deep had never truly felt like her mark really belonged to her. It felt like it was destined for somepony else, and appeared on her in some form of magical crossed wires incident.

It was a strange feeling, and she had never understood the reasoning behind it. She was a celebrated astronomer specialising in distant stars and galaxies, and the mark was a simple depiction of a trio of blue stars- the same blue as her eyes. By all reasoning, it should have never been an issue- she shouldn't be feeling like this.

But she had never felt any kind of connection with the symbol, that more often than not, spelled out the special talent of a pony.

Looking at the mark again, like she had for every day since she got it, she felt the very same emptiness that she always did. The three stars held no comfort for her, no inner meaning, no point.

Deep closed her eyes and sighed.

This is why she found herself on the train station in Ponyville, almost a thousand miles north of her home in the city of Oataca.

Out of desperation, she had sent a letter to Princess Twilight Sparkle, not even expecting a reply from the incredibly busy Royal. The very next morning, a scroll had popped into existence right as she was eating a croissant. Oh, the reply she had gotten was extensive, informative, and had a pair of fully paid train tickets included with it. The Princess had mentioned that she would be bringing in some professionals to assist her, as cutie mark magic was not her speciality.

So here Deep Field stood, waiting patiently for her pickup to arrive.

While she waited, she decided to watch the locals as they went about their business.

Anypony that wasn’t living under a rock knew of Ponyville. It had become a household name, because six of the greatest heroines that Equis had ever seen lived there. This group had saved the world on innumerable occasions, and were living legends.

But looking around, it was still not much more than a rural farming town. Beautifully crafted thatched roof cottages lined the packed-dirt streets, and the smell of freshly baked bread and pastries seemed to be part of the atmosphere here. In the distance, she could hear market vendors advertising their wares.

Solely on aesthetic, it felt just like just another earth pony town, but there was something special about this place that she couldn’t put her hoof on. She had heard this phenomenon mentioned by a travel writer named Compass Rose in a well researched article she had written for the Manehattan Times.

She had said that this was the place where all the true movers and shakers lived, where everypony was a friend you’d never met before, and where it just felt like home. The cost of living here was still cheap and easily affordable, despite the town’s fame and resident Royalty.

She smiled as she saw a grinning human man walk by carrying a very pretty sandy coloured earth pony mare that was snuggled into his chest, a vivid blush upon her cheeks. Love was also in the air here, she thought idly.

As she watched the couple step out of sight, she began to notice that the local population was a real melting pot of cultures and species. Ponies, deer, griffons, hippogriffs, and many more besides could be seen in just her relatively narrow field of vision. All smiling, laughing or simply spending time with each other on this beautiful, heaven-sent morning.

With no outward sign of it, Deep Field began to experience a longing, a homesickness of sorts for this very town she was standing in. It just felt right, it truly did feel like the place she was meant to be all along.

Involuntarily, her breathing hitched and tears began to freely fall from her eyes.

Despite the tears, she couldn’t bring herself to audibly cry, so she simply wiped away the tears as they came.

Gradually, she managed to reassert control of herself, and the tears stopped flowing, and not a moment too soon, as a small purple dragon rounded the corner and approached her.

“You must be Deep Field, right?” The little drake asked, while writing something on a sheet attached to a clipboard, but simultaneously maintaining eye contact.

“That would be me,” she said, “I take it that you're Spike? Saviour of the Crystal Empire, and all-around nice guy?”

Spike proudly puffed out his chest, and grinned, “Oh so you HAVE heard of me? That makes a pleasant change! Anyway, I’m to take you directly to the Princess, she’s looking forward to meeting you, and so are her... uh, specialists.”

“Oh, something wrong, Spike?” Deep Field asked.

“Nothing wrong Ms. Field, they’re just not what you’d expect when you think of specialists in the field of Cutie Mark Magic. Trust me though, they might be a little full-on at times, but they do know what they’re talking about, and Princess Twilight quite literally couldn’t have gotten anypony better to assist you, as they are also the ONLY known experts in it. Now then, Ms. Field- are you ready to go?”

With a respectful tilt of the head Deep simply nodded and gestured for Spike to lead the way, a task for which he took to with a grin and not a little gusto.

Deep Field smiled as she cantered after the surprisingly fast dragon towards the large crystalline edifice that loomed over the town like huge tree. She had decided that she would move to this town as soon as possible. And perhaps, she would get some answers about her cutie mark issues.

She could but hope.

Hey everyone,

This is yet another post to keep the content flowing while I work on other stuff on the background. This is actually a brand new character that just kinda appeared in my mind’s eye this morning, and I just had to bring her to life, so to speak.

Deep Field is named after a outdated or informal term for distant fields of galaxies, but I just kinda liked the way it sounded.

Full character development is still ongoing, but with any luck I’ll be able to get a bio put together for her soon, but that’ll have to wait until I clear my other projects.

Thanks for checking out what I’ve been working on! I hope that you’ve enjoyed this little diversion, and as always- take care of yourselves, and I’ll catch you next time! ^^
