ORIGIN
1. Man-made Hell. Lig ‘Lillian’ Worth was the third child and only daughter of Duncan Worth, a US-born adventurer/mercenary/spy (depending on the kind of jobs he was offered) who in 1953 had settled down in Indochina after 20 years of peregrinations across the globe, and Kawm Lor, a Hmong woman whose clan had been stalwart supporters of the French during the First Indochina War and then of the Americans in the Second. In 1975, when Lig was 14, her mother’s family was exterminated almost to a man by the North Vietnam-aligned Pathet Lao, who were in ‘total war’ mode with the country’s disloyal ethnic minority. Duncan and Kawm’s elder son, Alang, who was visiting some of his relatives when the Pathet Lao came, had also fallen under their bayonets and bullets.
2. The Long March. The couple, overwhelmed by grief and deathly afraid for the future of their two remaining children, decided to leave the country as quickly as possible. South Vietnam had already fallen and the Pathet Lao controlled all the routes to Thailand Duncan and Kawm knew of. The only path forward was going south, towards a country, Cambodia, where the situation could only be described as “the crazies are running the asylum”. It was the least bad option in an array of very bad ones, as the whole family soon found out. The long march southwards was a horrific experience for all involved. Kawm died during a skirmish with a Pathet Lao unit who had bumped into the Worths completely by chance. An infected wound took the life of the middle son, Xov, one week later and only a few miles from the Cambodian border. Lastly, Duncan contracted an acute form of Dengue fever which would eventually take his life. Luckily for him, he managed to reach an isolated village in Northern Cambodia before dying and breathed his last knowing that at least his daughter was alive and in good hands. The village had been founded by people who had been displaced by the War and welcomed Lig as one of their own. One of the leading families of the community were Hmong like her mother and took the girl under their wing as an adoptive daughter.
3. The Princess. Lig went on to become a beautiful and intelligent young woman, although what she experienced during her family’s escape from their homeland and the constant threat represented by the Khmer Rouge stripped her of all of her innocence way before reaching maturity. Being adopted by one of the leading families in the village, she grew up next to the decision-makers of the small community and wholeheartedly supported the position of ‘resistance to the last man’ espoused by her adoptive parents. The village was their new home and not even Pol Pot and his army of cutthroats would have dislodged them from their little corner of Cambodia. When the Vietnamese Army invaded Cambodia in late 1978 to put an end to the Khmer Rouge regime, it was a 17-year-old Lig who made contact with the closest units of the invading forces to help them mopping up the numerous pockets of Khmer Rouge resistance still plaguing Northern Cambodia, providing the Vietnamese with invaluable intelligence about their positions and the region’s terrain. They might have been allies of the Pathet Lao who had massacred her blood relatives, but the teenager had a pragmatic mind. Getting rid of the existential threat represented by Pol Pot’s dictatorship was always going to be the #1 priority. After this outstanding display of bravery, diplomacy and wisdom, Lig Worth stopped being merely the adoptive daughter of one of the village’s leaders. This 18-year-old orphan had become the undisputed leader of her people.
4. The Man with the White Hair. Lig first crossed paths with Deathstroke in late 1980, when the most sought-after mercenary in the world used came to her village looking for a temporary, secluded home while preparing for a series of missions on both sides of the Thai-Cambodian border. The man smelled like danger and death from a mile away, but Ms. Worth welcomed him in the small community she was the leader of. During his stay in the village, Slade and Lig became lovers and, once his missions in the area were all successfully carried out, they remained in contact, embarking on an on-and-off love affair for the next 12 years. They met every time Mr. Wilson’s job brought him to Indochina and neighboring areas and, during one of their trysts in 1983, Slade impregnated Lig. When the latter found out, she chose to have the baby-- but also to keep her a secret from her father. She loved that man, in a sense, but she was of the idea that an innocent child shouldn’t know about the existence of men like Slade Wilson. It took a whole year for Deathstroke to visit her again. Meanwhile, Ms. Worth had all the time to give birth to a healthy baby girl with abnormally light hair. Lig named her Xia, in honor of a friend of Lig’s who had been of great help during the pregnancy’s final weeks. However, just like her parents had done with their three children (Alang ‘Alan’ Worth, Xov ‘Sean’ Worth and Lig ‘Lillian’ Worth), she also gave her baby an alternative, Western name: Rose.
METAHUMAN POWERS
She inherited her father’s metagenes. While his own were artificially activated when he was in his twenties, Rose’s naturally manifested when she was 14. She shares several abilities with Mr. Wilson, like:
- Healing factor. Rose’s wounds heal six times as fast as those of a normal human being and she can re-grow missing limbs;
- Superhuman stamina;
- Superhuman speed. She can run 100 meters flat in 8.25 seconds;
- Superhuman agility.
A naturally-occurred mutation in her metagene array caused her default augmented intellect to develop in a way that lets her take in large amounts of information and condense it all into a probability assessment-- with a very reduced margin of error-- which she perceives as a vision of the future, up to 5 seconds. She can then exploit such visions to her advantage and alter the course of events. This process is completely subconscious. As a result, it can also be occasionally triggered in her sleep, which has in a couple of occasions saved her life from sneak attacks. However, the mutation which granted her this invaluable, clairvoyance-adjacent skill had negative pleiotropic effects on her inherited enhanced strength. Her records in weightlifting stand at 450 pounds for "snatch", 570 pounds for "clean and jerk" and 680 pounds for bench press. While they are undoubtedly superhuman feats for a young woman of her size, it’s definitely a downgrade compared to Slade’s brute strength.
OTHER SKILLS
- Very developed strategic and tactical reasoning;
- Expert tracker;
- Extremely proficient with an ever-expanding array of melee weapons. Thanks to her superhuman intelligence and coordination, she can master any new weapon she comes in contact with (either human or alien) in a matter of hours;
- Lethal from 1,900 meters (2,078 yd) with a sniper rifle and from 200 meters (219 yards) with a handgun. She can reload an automatic pistol in 1.6 seconds. She generally displays excellent marksmanship skills with any weapon she finds herself using;
- She was raised as a bilingual child, using both English and Hmong Daw interchangeably. Aside from that, she’s fluent in several languages of East- and South-East Asia;
- As a martial artist, she's specialized in the following disciplines: (1) Niten Ichi-Ryū [teacher: Slade Wilson] and (2) Ninjutsu [teacher: Sarge Steel, Dinah Lance].
LIMITATIONS
- She has a drinking problem. Due to her healing factor keeping her safe from hepatic steatosis and the pathologies associated with it, she has often indulged in excessive alcohol consumption since the age of 15 and refuses to quit the bottle for good even though drunkenness and hangovers have sometimes had deep impacts on her mission performance and her relationships with her teammates. In one occasion, she even sexually assaulted her leader in the Titans, Robin, in his own apartment, although his quick reaction relegated to whole thing to a pretty minor affair and Rose was readily forgiven after she sobered up. She’s also an incorrigible smoker, though she’s never gone beyond 10 cigarettes a day;
- She’s very often a difficult person to get along with at a personal and, to a lesser degree, professional level. She has a talent for coming up in any circumstance with cutting and/or dismissive comments that always hit the mark and she’s very liberal when it comes to use it. Moreover, she has showed time and time again that from her point of view there’s no clear division between ‘spirit of initiative’ and ‘penchant for insubordination’. These issues with her character were particularly problematic during her time in the Gotham Knights and her first months in the Titans, but counseling and personal experiences have softened her edges, at least in some circumstances. If she doesn’t respect a person, though, her trenchant, rebellious attitude can still come out in full force.
SEXUALITY
She’s 100% heterosexual. Having grown up with a mother who managed a brothel, surrounded by more than a dozen ‘aunts’, Rose found out how children at the age kids usually learn to read and write (she had already accomplished both goals, at age 3 and 4 respectively). Sometime later, it wasn’t hard for her to accept that people could very well perform the action just for the pleasure that came from it. Having acquired some solid basic knowledge, learning that some people preferred having sexual intercourse with people of the same gender didn’t leave her 8-year-old mind all that confused. To cut the long story short, having found how complicated and beautiful human sexuality was at such a tender age, she had years to think about what she really wanted before puberty hit and, once hormones came to knock on her door, she had the answer: she wanted handsome boys and she wanted them now.
When asked, Ms. Wilson revealed that a total of 4 people have so far held a special place in her heart:
· Richard Trayce lived in the mansion next to that owned by Sarge Steel at the time she lived with ‘Uncle Sarge’ in Alexandria (VA). He was the prototype of the boy from a good family who hid a wild side behind the stuffy façade he was forced to put up in everyday life. They were both 14 and neither of them quite understood what love is, but both of them had definitely noticed that their bodies were changing and new instincts were arising inside them. They were each other’s ‘first’, but they eventually broke up after less than a year. At the age of 15, spurred by something inside her which she couldn’t quite describe, Rose left Mr. Steel’s home to find her way in the world of her father, the underworld of mercenaries, and Richard couldn’t follow her. He definitely tried to change her mind, but she ultimately persuaded him that her wild side was very different from his;
· Timothy Drake, a.k.a. Robin, checked a lot of boxes from Ms. Wilson’s perspective. He, a boy, could lead a team of girls with ill-assorted personalities on dangerous missions with a high probability of success. This made him reliable and reliable was equivalent to manly in Rose’s dictionary. Her father would have undoubtedly disapproved of him and just for that Tim’s quotations skyrocketed. Finally, she found him cute as heck, which definitely helped. The fact that he was already taken, by somebody who cordially detested Ms. Wilson to boot, made it all the more exciting from her point of view. Timothy however, despite caring for her well-being more than she thought she deserved, never returned her feelings and their relationship was doomed to stay a one-sided one. Today, Rose still has feelings for him, though over the time spent away from the Knights they morphed into something akin to genuine admiration;
· Man Ho-sun entering her life wasn’t something Rose could have foreseen. The 19-year-old Korean computer wiz who had been Deathstroke’s tech guy for a whole year before finding out who his employer really was-- a discovery which compelled him to agree to testify against him-- was just looking for a way to save his life and becoming the fiancée of Slade’s daughter was the only plan he had come up with which had reasonable chances to succeed. Being offered an engagement ring by a complete stranger who just wanted to protect his hide didn’t leave Rose aghast-- in fact, she found the whole thing rather amusing. She grew incredibly fond of that nerdy young man and of his extremely straightforward manners and even started sleeping with him a few weeks later. When he died, killed by Deathstroke (though not the one he expected), Ms. Wilson herself was surprised by how much she mourned his death;
· Edward ‘Eddie’ Bloomberg, a.k.a. Kid Devil, had joined the Titans a couple of weeks before Rose, but he looked even more like a fish out of water than she did during her first few days at the team’s HQ. As a heroine with a bad reputation and one of the least heroic-sounding names ever heard, she felt obligated to extend the hand of friendship to the most demonic-looking hero ever seen. They got along surprisingly well, considering their very different personalities-- in fact, in just a short while they looked like they were joined at the hip, gaining a name as the team’s hellions, one part party animals, one part pranksters and one part notorious ass-kickers. Then, on a late Summer night blessed by a beautiful full moon, while they were relaxing in the pool area on the roof of Titan Tower, they shared a kiss unlike any between two people who were ‘just friends’. Mr. Bloomberg was the one suggesting that they shouldn’t rush things, telling Rose that they could still be friends, albeit ‘with benefits’ if she wished so. Ms. Wilson didn’t want to hear any of that, though. By the next morning they were officially a couple.
When it comes to paraphilias, Ms. Wilson’s interviews have revealed that she has some low-key submissive tendencies. She doesn’t identify as a sub, nor has she ever practiced BDSM, but she candidly acknowledged that, if her sexual partner enjoys her complete trust, she doesn’t mind letting him have his way with her regardless of how comfortable the experience ends up being for her. In other words, she ‘likes it rough’ and she has no shame admitting it.
SPIRITUALITY
She usually describes herself as irreligious, but in reality she never let go of some rites and traditions of the folk religion of the Hmong, mainly those connected to ancestor veneration. It is not unusual to see her perform offerings of food and spirit money, pour libation and burn incense to appease the spirits of the deceased. It’s debatable if she actually expects to earn their favor with such rituals, though.
KEY MOMENTS
- The late Eighties had been a bad time for Lillian Worth’s village. A series of bad harvests and floods had encouraged a significant portion of its young men to leave for better opportunities in a now peaceful South-East Asia or abroad. On the other hand, new refugees, almost all of them impoverished country girls with only their bodies left to sell, had flocked to Ms. Worth having heard of her wise and just leadership. With many women and few men around, to feed her people Lillian had been forced to turn the community she led into a ‘brothel town’, which attracted clients from three different countries. It was less than ideal for a woman of solid principles like her, but it kept the specter of mass starvation away and she made sure none of her girls was mistreated or contracted easily-preventable STD’s. Unfortunately, while the spirit of Rose’s mother stayed strong until the end, her body was poisoned by the endless concerns gnawing at her. Lig ‘Lillian’ Worth died of cancer in 1992. She was 31. Before dying, she wrote a final letter to her lover, Slade Wilson, whom she hadn’t seen in the past two years, and told him everything about their daughter, who had turned 8 not long before. Two weeks after Lillian’s funeral, Slade and a group of allies came to the village her mother operated to pull her out. One of Deathstroke’s associates discovered Rose in one of the secret rooms scattered across the village’s houses she used to hide in every time Westerners came to her hometown-- and she shot him out of fear, a wound which paralyzed him for life. Wintergreen, who rushed to his friend’s aid at hearing the gunshot, eventually calmed the girl down as Slade, who had also reached the secret room, looked on. Even if they hadn’t shared the same white hair and pale blue eyes, he would have known that he had found his daughter;
- Rose and Slade teamed up for about a month after an eventful father-daughter reunion in October 2000. They went through a number of adventures across the United States, jumping from one contract to the next, until the younger Wilson heard news that there was a nine-figure price on her head through the grapevine of the metacriminal underworld. Slade told her not to worry, since nobody would have been crazy enough to attacked her now that she was always at his side, but instead the always leery Rose Wilson found her father’s attempts at minimizing the threat very out of character. In spite of that, when she was presented with unambiguous evidence that her father was in contact with the people who had put the price on her head and that he was going to accept the job if they were ready to add another figure to that number, she felt only dread rather than vindication. Throwing caution to the winds, she stood face to face with Mr. Wilson and told him that she knew everything about what she was doing behind her back and that she was ready for anything, except being taken alive. However, her father surprised her by saying that there was a way out. If she had accepted to go to Gotham City and kill Black Canary-- the Black Canary, of Birds of Prey fame, who had a long history with Deathstroke-- he wouldn’t have just turned down the contract, but also hunted the ones who had put the price on his daughter’s head until the ends of the world. A still dumbfounded Rose took that opportunity, went to Gotham, got her ass kicked by Black Canary and somehow found herself enrolled in a sort of school for young vigilantes and living in a Downtown brownstone, which was actually one of the most secure building in the big city, side-by-side with professional and wannabe superheroes. It was only several weeks later that she realized that the whole thing, starting with the price on her head, had been a setup orchestrated by her father and Ms. Lance to push the young Ravager away from the world of mercenaries and make her realize that her skills could be put to another, better (according to Black Canary, who confirmed her new student’s suspicions) use. Any way she looked at it, truncating their working relationship with such a pantomime fit her father’s M.O. perfectly;
OUTSTANDING FEATS
- She won the 2000 edition of the World Knife-Edge Tournament (host city for that year: Santo Domingo), the top secret competition between the new entries in the world of professional mercenaries, who have this opportunity to make a name for themselves in front of a world-wide audience of select spectators -- mostly the kind of shady people and organizations who need and also can afford the services of such professionals. Rose’s real reason for competing was that she was working for a couple of clients who seriously wanted three of the tournament’s participants dead or at least permanently incapacitated and Ravager delivered. She influenced the sorting process so that she ended up in the same group as two of them, the little fish, whom she dispatched with moderate effort, and then she faced the real threat and undisputed favorite of the entire tournament, Karma (a.k.a. Fleet Delmar, though there’s no way to tell if it was his real name), in a spectacular final. Despite his telepathy being an effective counter to her clairvoyance, Ravager eventually came out on top by entering a state of ‘competitive trance’, which made her thoughts -- and, consequently, actions -- next to unreadable from the telepath’s point of view. Before even turning 16, Rose Wilson had become the hottest name in the world of mercenaries, won the 12 million dollar prize of the tournament and honored the biggest contract in her short career, all within a week;
- She played a pivotal role in the capture of Jorge Cazalla (member of the metacriminal group DUPLEX, q.v. JLA Dossier n. FLF - 555478 SAB), saving the lives of all of her teammates and of at least half a hundred civilians in the process. Having found out that the man the Gotham Knights were looking for was wielding the powerset of her brother Joey, a.k.a. Jericho, Rose had become extremely paranoid about the possibility that one of her teammates could act against them because they had been possessed by Cazalla. So, while Spoiler and Robin were attending Bruce Wayne and Talia Head’s penthouse party as guests, waiting for their man to make the first move, Ravager from her observation point couldn’t stop keeping her eyes on her teammates more than the other guests at the party and ruminating on every single word she had exchanged with Tim, Steph and Tanya over the past few days. That ended up being the right thing to do, since at one point she came to the conclusion that there had been something slightly off with Power Girl’s speech pattern and lexical choices during their last communication, right before radio silence was imposed. She sprinted towards her teammate’s observation point, in an empty apartment of a different Downtown skyscraper almost 2 km away, and she found confirmation that her paranoia was entirely justified. Ms. Spears was tied up like a sausage to a chair in front of the apartment’s full-height window facing the Wayne-Head Foundation’s building. The terrorist had gagged her, suppressed her powers with a power-dampening collar and used a pair of blepharostats (two plastic tubes kept feeding drips of eyewash from a bag to keep the eyes hydrated) to keep her sight always focused on the place the attack was going to take place. When Spoiler and Robin thwarted Cazalla’s assassination attempt, he ran to the fixed binoculars he had accurately prepared so that he could establish eye contact with his ‘escape route’, i.e. Tanya, and instead found himself looking at Ravager (he couldn’t use her eyes since she wore her trademark mask) and her raised middle finger. He was knocked out while he was still metabolizing how screwed he was. An inspection of the body he was ‘wearing’ found that it was carrying enough explosive to turn the penthouse and the underlying floor into a mass of twisted, blackened metal: Cazalla’s plan B in case the ‘clean’ attack had failed;
FUN FACTS
- She came in contact with many of her suppliers in the black market thanks to the Prieto siblings, Emmanuel and Valeria, two former F.A.R.C. guerrillas who left their existences of violence and secrecy behind and started working in the mansion of Sarge Steel, a man they owed a lot to, as butler and maid respectively. Rose had been on friendly terms with both of them ever since they started turning a blind eye-- and switching off the mansion’s security systems-- to Richard Trayce’s nighttime trips to her bedroom. When she revealed that she was seriously thinking about starting making a name for herself as a mercenary to them, the siblings supported Rose by sharing with her a list of people who sold the best tools for the kind of job she was interested in. Mr. Steel never really reprimanded or punished the Prietos for that after his protégé let his home. He had realized that the girl couldn’t have resisted the lure of the underworld for much longer, no matter what he did, and in fact he was happy that at least she was going to face her next ordeals with a top-notch equipment;
- She belongs to the subset of vigilantes who, while accepting the ‘hero’ moniker, adamantly refuses to be considered a ‘role model’. To her credit, she has little time for most of the “bad girl vigilante” stereotypes of the past decade, but it’s still undeniable that the arts of diplomacy and weighing each and every word that comes out of a hero’s mouth while on official business of any kind are lost on her. From her point of view, those are just the means most people exploit to be completely insincere while keeping an appearance of plausible deniability. And who would ever trust an insincere hero? This is never more evident than when the matter of her relationship with Kid Devil is brought up, especially the fact that she was chosen by him as his deputy after his election. A cautious person in her position would point out that Wonder Girl, the first leader of the Titans, also was in a relationship with her right-hand man-- well, teen-- for most of her tenure, but that would mean ignoring the insult that, from her point of view, is always hidden in that kind of statements or insinuations. Her snappy replies-- the recorded ones, that is-- range from an almost humoristic-- for her standards-- “had I known more than 8 Kama Sutra positions, he would have left the leader’s chair to me!” (02/18/2003 interview for CHAMPIONS.com, America’s #1 cape gossip website) to a downright nasty “yeah, can you imagine getting a position of responsibility after banging a single guy?” (to Toxin of the Mexican teen hero group Los Técnicos during the 03/22/2003 official meeting with the Titans, referencing the many, many allegations concerning the 19-year-old female vigilante from Naucalpan).
CONFIDENTIAL INFO
- She declines all responsibility-- and rightly so, according to the JLA panel which reviewed the whole matter-- but the investigation conducted in the immediate aftermath of Lightbringer’s nervous breakdown revealed that Ms. Wilson played a role in the creation of the highly stressful environment surrounding her former leader in the Titans in the months preceding the incident. Her own teammates and the young heroes from Gotham have described several episodes taking place during the four collaborations between the Titans and the Knights where Ravager seemed to be intentionally undermining the authority of Naomi McDuffie, always to the advantage of Robin, who as a matter of fact often acted as the paramount leader of both groups during these team-ups. Without Rose’s involvement, it’s almost sure that Lightbringer’s manic episode would have come anyway, considering the other factors which were contributing to destabilize Naomi’s psychological balance, but also that the dynamics of it would have been different, with unpredictable effects on the final body count (mercifully kept at 0 due to the timely intervention against Ms. McDuffie of several young heroes, Ravager being one of them);
- Rose Wilson was declared dead by Ra’ut L’lwer, a.k.a. Chimera, the Titans’ field doctor, at 5:47 am on 4/18/2003, in the aftermath of the Battle at the Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America (q.v. JLA Dossier n. VWJ - 320684). Ryōmen-sukuna and his cadres had seemed unbeatable for a time, but the Titans had eventually gained the upper hand and banished the King of Curses from the material realm. Unfortunately, Ravager, who had had her powers messed up by one of the Curses during the long battle, was in the main structure of the Shinto shrine when it collapsed on itself in the final moments of the climactic struggle and without her healing factor the internal injuries killed her. The whole thing is better explained in Mr. Bloomberg’s file, but suffice it to say that Kid Devil knew that his girlfriend was in Hell and, if she was there, he could reach her. The soul of Ms. Wilson was literally rescued from eternal damnation by Mr. Bloomberg, who managed to persuade Lady Blaze, the otherworldly being he owes his powers and appearance to, to let it out of the devils’ domain if he could locate it, something he had to accomplish before Hell’s atmosphere could finish eating away at his humanity (in other words, the moment when he would have stopped caring about his loved ones). Once her body-- repaired in the meantime inside the Med-Pod of the T-Jet, after it was recalibrated to repair dead tissues-- and soul were brought together by Kid Devil, Rose was alive again, apparently without recollections of her time in Hell and thinking she had just been seriously injured. A hypnosis session however revealed that she remembers many things of her extra-corporeal experience but those memories are not directly accessible while she’s conscious. The leader of the Titans wanted to tell his fiancée everything from the start, but he was persuaded by the team’s counselor to withhold all sensitive information until the monitoring of Rose’s psychological conditions is over and it’s established that it’s safe for her to be aware of such a potentially traumatic news. The same restrictions apply for all the other Titans.
