Description

Important Countries during WW2, the Cold War, and the Present Day.

What were some of the countries that existed from the beginning of the Second World War, to the end of the Cold War, ensuing into the Present Day in our world? I think the 20th century was a very interesting and fascinating moment in human history. What were some nations that existed then?

The main allied forces and “friends” were the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, and Mexico. Four of the five friends mentioned here are republics, whereas the U.K. has a monarchy.

Germany: After Hitler founded the Nazi Party and took over Germany, he named it the German Reich. This country existed for several years, before and during the Second World War. In the ensuing aftermath of the war, Germany was taken over by foreign powers (Allies). Subsequently, after many years, we were left with two main factions: West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany), and East Germany (German Democratic Republic). In 1990, these two countries merged together to create a “Unified Germany.” This one Germany is a republic.

Eastern Europe and the Communists: One of the main communist nations was the U.S.S.R. or the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which was known famously as Russia. The other countries that were also part of this communist “clique” were Yugoslavia, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia. During the Cold War, America did not side with Russia and the so-called “Communist bloc.” They were often seen by the west as “Evil.” After several years in their country's existence, the end of the 20th century, in particular the 1990’s, saw the end of the Cold War and the dissolution and disintegration of these five republic countries mentioned here. The U.S.S.R. collapsed in 1991, with Yugoslavia that died at the beginning of the 21st century.

United Kingdom and the “Big 3”: During most of the Cold War, the United States allies included the United Kingdom and the other commonwealth nations of Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Though the Commonwealth boasts many countries of the former British Empire, both big and small, these three countries in particular had a lot of power. Having colonial roots from “England,” the Big 3 have evolved and advanced greatly since WW2 and during the Cold War. These four countries, though independent, are not republics but are instead constitutional monarchies. They exist from the end of the Cold War, into the Present Day still, and are located on three separate continents: Europe, Oceania, and North America. All flags seen here have Union Jacks, except for the modern-day flag of Canada. It should come as no surprise that these are the “good guys!”

Cold War in Asia: Just like in Europe, Asia has also had its fair share of wars during the 20th century. These include the wars of China, Korea, and Vietnam. Since the end of the Chinese Civil War, there are officially two countries that share the name “China” and they are the People’s Republic of China, and the Republic of China. The P.R.C. maintains it’s nation on mainland China (continental Asia), whereas the R.O.C. maintains it’s nation on the island of Taiwan and the surrounding tiny islands around it. The Korean peninsula after the Korean War was subdivided into two: the Communist North (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) and the (not seen here) Republic of Korea, a.k.a. South Korea. Similarly, Vietnam was one country, but then became two during the Vietnam War, then became one again as a socialist (communist) state after the loss. To this day, these countries remain intact and they are all republics (be it socialist or not). Who is evil here? You decide!

As you can see, there are many countries mentioned here that no longer exist and as such, these flags are no longer in use. Whereas for some, the country still exists but the flag has changed (i.e. Canada). Whilst, for some the politics and geography changed but the flag has not. Interesting, huh?
