Description
It's the Third World within the First World."Inhalant drugs are often used by children, teenagers, incarcerated or institutionalized people, and impoverished people, because these solvents and gases are legally available and inexpensive. However, most users tend to be adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17. In some countries, chronic, heavy inhalant use is concentrated in marginalized, impoverished communities."
This is the case in Canada, where the sight of native youngsters inhaling gasoline is not rare.
"Inhalant use is socially determined. Canada's First Nations are afflicted with poverty, poor housing, high levels of unemployment and incarceration, emerging epidemics of diabetes and HIV/AIDS, high rates of disability and inadequate health care. "

The inspiration of this piece actually comes from a particular documentary on the aboriginal youth in Canada. The sight of seeing native youth inhaling gasoline in the attempt of tasting "happiness" while damaging their bodies is absolutely heartbreaking.
Canada is a resourceful country where everything is taken for granted: we have immense reserve of water and gas; we are technologically advanced; plus, peace and liberalism lighten this landmass... However, another reality is seen in the isolated aboriginal communities: it's another world that is haunted by poverty, violence and depression.
It is like a darkened and foreign world inside ours; it is a Third World within a First World.
The First World belongs to us, but not to them, even if we are united by one title: Canadian.

This... Definately makes a statement. Even if one does not take the time to read your artist comment (which I did).

Glad you decided to.
I'm proud to be Canadian, but it makes me sad when people ignore social issues completely because "we don't have problems like that up here."

What a sin! I think it's amazing you did such a moving piece on such a serious- yet highly ignored- problem here in Canada. Kudos.

Thanks! (I ignored this work's sketch for a while too, heh) Somehow, it is just astonishing seeing how different the native's situation is different to ours, despite the fact that Canada promotes every individuals equality on status...

Oh good god.
I remember that documentary; we watched it in... um... either civics/careers or history.
I feel like there's no way to solve this huge, head-aching problem...

Lucky for you guys to get more watching documentary time than us D;
Well, problem always comes with a solution, but Canada's ignorance towards its native people is something people cannot swallow easily.
It's just sad seeing those kids living through all those hardships of a third world country, even if Canada is very advanced and such.

You are so efficientοΌ
I really want to spread my feeling about this reality but my language ability doesn't allow me to do so...TOT
It's sad to hear this, and yeah, the drug users are increasing every year, and some drugs are legal in Canada rightοΌ

>////< in contrast I don't have the guts to spend days on details...
Dude, your English is already good, don't discourage yourself so easily... Thus if you feel uncomfortable just shout in whatever language you like (even catglish!)
Cat-> Cathy, why didn't I realize that ;O
Now that's something sad to hear, though it's not so surprising with the economical recession going on. (And thinking optimistically, more addicts equal mean that more have the money to afford drug, isn't that a good sign seeing everyone getting richer?)
Dude, marijuana. It's actually not so surprising seeing it becoming another Canadian symbol -> [link]

I didn't realize that too...
Well if one is addicted to drugοΌ even if he's poor he'll still buy it anyways. But consumption promotes economy. XD
That picture is interesting. At first I didn't notice the difference between the leaves.(now I know how marijuana looks like...)

Live up in the North doing teaching?
Dude, if you can support the cold that sounds like a great idea.
._. High school dropping rate in the native communities is really high, and only fews of the students got access to university...
