I can only speak as some goofball fan, not an actual factual artist, most if not all of what I say can be dismissed as just liking fuzzy green guys with long ears. These three (of five) characters are good, you do get a feel for the sort of character dynamic that exists between them and also how they’d work alone. Design wise there's a decent amount of appeal to them and I’m real curious as to where they'll end up. Problem though is that if they’re steampunk where does that come in with their clothing and accessories? I don’t know squat about steampunk I’ll be fair but these guys do err closer to a generic fantasy style than to steampunk. Given this is early stuff I do want to see more body shapes and height examples so I can get a feel for this species and what design features run through all of them such as if there’s colour differentiations and I’d like to see a turnaround at some point. And yeah, I would like if they had tails, don’t know why and don't know what length, figured if they're on the face of it to me dragon/rabbit hybrid looking types maybe something arm length or shorter maybe?

Basically, it’s solid stuff and would like to see more so yeah, more dammit!

i think its a really fair assessment. i really have not gotten to the point were the personalities i have been created have really been physicalized. which is not a word but whatever. the clothing was a first pass. its not really steampunky at first glance but its more of their universe that will have a bigger influence on that. but i have to agree now that you and have pointed out there really isnt much *physical* dynamic in the bunch yet. and you totally called it cos it was really to just flesh out the species. i really need to personalize these characters in a way that is visually unique to each of them.

and the tail thing was buggin me too. i am leaning towards bunny tails with a variety of poofiness among individuals.....

thanks for a great critique!

RabidSquirrelNinja In reply to Lord-Kiyo [2010-12-14 22:17:30 +0000 UTC]

mor design really. i think the clothing and prop design needs to be slicker and the character designs need more variation in sillouhette and probably need to reflect a little more personality. that just imho...

Good idea. making clothes is always fun. even more so when you are making a whole new culture. Yeah with my creatuers, I have trouble making them all look real diffrnet.

|im most interested in character design

I'll start with expression; it's clear and well-crafted- but feels somewhat empty. As in, I can imagine how these characters would react in a variety of situations- but I can't imagine the reactions to deviate much from what is presented here. In terms of the actual line art- kuroseishin raises a valid point- however, I'm not certain as to how much differentiation is necessary- I imagine it would depend on how far you want to take the characters. Similarly, I would personally like to see you find the boundaries of what you believe to be the limits of expression in these (or any) characters- and push just oh-so much beyond that-

In terms of composition; I'm left without a focal point. There are quite a few lines of actions- and I feel that the environment is overstyled. Kill the vignette and let's see the characters. I think with a little polish, these characters could definitely fit the role in a more narrative piece. [link]

Bottom line: you have crafted some killer expressions and mood- now I'm interested to see how these characters would act in a real scene.

|I'm left without a focal point

(ive stole that from you now xD) well like i said above this was really just a study as i was playing with the physical build of the species. as such i really wasnt looking to make a scene with it but it turned out that way. to me, the focal point is the deeper blue guy on the left because i started with him and i spent the most time on him

i think i will do a turn around for each design and i will do a pin up of each. this was just sort of like... when you are staring a a blank piece of paper but you have an idea in your head that you just want out!

thanks as always for the input. (great link btw) i dont know how narrative to get with them because i dont really know where this project will take me. ^___^

|(ive stole that from you now xD)

Well… alright… but be careful with it!

|the focal point is the deeper blue guy on the left

Hmm… what keeps catching my eye is the dark shadow under Teal's hat in the center…

|i started with him and i spent the most time on him

I could see that… I also love how you're balancing the positive and negative space of the individual characters…

|when you are staring a a blank piece of paper but you have an idea in your head that you just want out!

Buy bigger paper and go to town. Scratch, scrawl and slap down some ink. I find that the best way for me to transfer ideas from my mind to a visual reality is to just try everything-

|i dont really know where this project will take me.

Awesome.

I like the species design but I think the individual designs need a little tweaking. Remember that one of the most important things in differentiating between the characters is the silhouette-- and with the long ears, horns, shoulder tufts and same facial shape I don't think there's quite enough difference between them. It's a good start though! if these were juxtaposed with a completely different build/species they would look very striking!

|one of the most important things in differentiating between the characters is the silhouette

this was kind of the bearing i was looking for. i was going about it the wrong way and it was rather obvious. i was really trying to work out the species design and then force the design on characters in my head instead of letting their personalities manifest themselves in the shape of the creature i had made. it really is three personalities done in three different palatte swaps xD

i already know how im going to change these guys. thanks for the help!! XD

Looking good so far! The characters' species is unique enough. Horns, cone shaped, clawed hands, fangs, long ears and pointy horns. Like a mixture of crickitt and rabbit. Strange but pretty far from scary. Their clothing is closer to fantasy (apart from the little guy's hat), but there is nothing wrong with that since you wanted to create something original, right?
What really matters is how you'll design their surroundings. Won't be easy considering the lavishly detailed world we see in steampunk worlds.

Note: How will they use these hands?

|Note: How will they use these hands?

first off, i have waffled on making them fingers or claws. the important part is that they are all opposable to one another. and thier technology would have evolved to take advantage of that hand type, tools would have to rely on the pointiness of claws rather than the friction of hairless digits. and thats the hard/fun part.

So, is this a bit steampunk then? I've only just come to realize that steampunk is the name to the style, I just kinda referred to it as classic/gear style. Still the characters look cool and don't need any tweaking imo.

RabidSquirrelNinja In reply to fexus [2010-04-09 01:57:50 +0000 UTC]

well as i understand it its really like a genre of scifi but because of the premise seems to adopt the aesthetic of the turn of the century time period

really the concept around it makes these guys more steampunk but im not really an expert xD

anyway i am glad you like the characters. i will try not to tweak them too much then xD
