Corollary: I will never do anything to anyone else's colored versions beyond appreciation and praise.

.....................................................

I don't usually do separate lineart for the Expressions of Light series, but this time it worked out to the design's advantage.

The central image was originally going to be an engraving on a grave marker for one of my uncles, but the non-religious side of the family threw a fit.

So he got a crane design instead. This is ironic, because the non-religious guys said the crane was okay, as it was a *Japanese* symbol of immortality.

*facepalm*

Honestly, I don't care either way. The crane design I drew up looks quite nice, and I now have my Christmas Card design for 2012. Booyah.

Very nice (and interesting tale - religion and straight thinking ... don't match! ). The repeating patterns work really well - very organic, like a shell.

Thanks very much! I find repeating patterns interesting, though difficult to do as completely symmetrical designs - hence the differences from bit to bit.

I generally agree that religions have a narrow perspective on the world, but the hysterically anti-religious are no less narrow. However, I also think it is possible to be strongly spiritual without tripping over dogma. I try to fall into this category most of the time.

LOL LOL LOL. Wasn't there something about a nice halibut in there, too...? I've only seen Life of Brian once.

Yeah, There was...

Still, I don't understand, It's just saying Jehova- *Gets pelted with more stones*

Throwing a fit over an angel, but not another religious symbol? That's just weird. Either way, this is beautiful. I like how the wings and robe look (almost resemble seashells, actually - did your uncle like the ocean?). And the background makes me think of fireworks and moons/planets.... Very cool design.

I agree. People are weird, especially where "tolerance" concepts are concerned. But like I said, I didn't mind doing a different design because I can always repurpose the unused designs for other projects. It ends up saving me time during the end-of-year crunch, which is dandy. It's their reasoning that bugs me.

My uncle liked Art Deco a great deal, and Art Nouveau to a lesser extent. The central design was meant to pick up some of that, and that circular bit was what would have been on the headstone. The rest of it - the abstract stained-glass design - I added later to fill up some of the blank space around the angel.

The crane in many cultures symbolize a freed spirit. Im not a "religious" person but I am spiritual in the sence of being. I dislike the labels they make you use for your faith and just because one chooses not to be labed they call you agnostic or athiest anyway. If I were anything that can be labeled I'm an Idividualist.

LOL - I agree with you 100%. Everybody is getting into fights over labels, and how we interpret them. Thank you!

It's christian? I just see shells and waves...
Anyway, very calming and pretty.
I dont believe in practicing religions, but religions-derived art is often well-made, in many fields.

rachaelm5 In reply to TrollGirl [2011-10-10 01:01:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's meant to be an angel, and that equates Christian overtones in many people's minds. I find that interesting, as winged humanoids pop up in many different cultures, both before and after Christianity came onto the scene.

I agree with you; art inspired by religions tends to be well-made indeed - there's a lot of underlying passion in visualizing the oldest themes and ideals, no matter the particular cultural context.

Funny how tolerance is often a code word for "any religion but Christianity".

This is beautiful, Rachael.

Thanks, Steve.

I keep picking up that suspicious little nugget... Tolerance is a very slippery concept indeed, if defined with the secular-progressive dictionary. I'm just glad that they didn't make a scene at the funeral when we had a *gasp* PRIEST deliver the eulogy, and ecclesiastical musical accompaniment. People are so weird.
