Really? Thanks so much! I'd be colouring everything non-stop if I hadn't had to go back to school!

These kois will totally look great as a tattoo or on a t-shirt. It's elegant but with an edginess to it. I like the first koi the best coz I think it has better form and the flow of the background complements it.

The first one was designed specifically as a tattoo for my brother-in-law. The second and third are art trades with my fellow artists.

I wonder how you did the shading. Drawing each single point or do you use something else?

rachaelm5 In reply to Duzloo [2010-09-04 21:20:29 +0000 UTC]

I draw every single dot. It is traditional, mind-numbing stipple/pointilism.

Must be the most time consuming part of the whole picture

rachaelm5 In reply to Duzloo [2010-09-04 23:05:39 +0000 UTC]

Yes, and it must be done in short periods of time, too. My eyes go all funny if I look at the dots for too long.

rachaelm5 In reply to bluenova25 [2010-09-04 21:19:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

It's *based* on a butterfly koi. The actual fish has normal koi scales and head; the main difference is the longer, frillier fins. This is definitely fantasy-ized to a great extent.

aah butterfly koi...elegant fish and you captured the fluidity
dorsal fin looks a little too thick towards the top though but still love it XD
Mind if I colored this?

rachaelm5 In reply to ShroomsfromHell [2010-09-04 03:32:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes, very thick and bony, in keeping with the bone-and-water theme.

You're most welcome to color this, and thanks.
