The colors are amazingly good, reminds me of the Hibiscus wind piece you made.

Thanks!
I considered this one to be a really experimental piece, where I hadn't had a lot of practice with the colored-pencil-over-acrylic technique. This was also one of the first paintings that I did where I went back in with a lot of acrylic to do special effects, or in this case, to really punch the yellow highlights. The colored pencils just weren't quite bright enough!
It was a lot of fun do to, in any event, and it remains one of my favorites. I can't seem to sell it... So it hangs in my dining room so I can stare at it during breakfast.

What kind of paper do you use? And what kind of acrlyic? Mine is too opaque T_T
I really want to try out the colored pencil over paint technique you use, sounds like a load of fun and has a great effect. I have prismacolors, and I know those work, apparently ;D

For my larger projects, I use cold-pressed illustration board. It takes the paint really well without too much warping. I use Liquitex acrylics for the most part, because the local art store just happens to stock that brand.
If I start with acrylics, I do a thin wash. If the paint is too thick, it gets all plasticky and I can't use the colored pencils over it very well. So yes, very thin paint, thinned down with water. When I paint on top of other mediums, I use the acrylics at full strength, perhaps with just a little bit of water to get 'em to flow nicely. There are also some "flow aid" mediums that Liquitex makes to give different consistencies to the paint - thinner or thicker or full of little rocks and stuff.
I don't use acrylics all that often; I tend to like watercolors better on the whole.

I'm trying out watercolours first, on cardstock or watercolour paper, would that work for now?
How much is cold-pressed illustration board? I'm pretty poor right now

Watercolor paper will probably give you better results. Cardstock is often too thin, so it only works if you reduce the amount of water you use. It tends to warp pretty badly, too.
Illustration board tends to run between about $2 and $7, depending on the size. Most art supply stores will sell the sheets in 15x20 inches, 20x30 inches and 30x40 inches. The Dick Blick catalogue (dickblick.com) has some other options available, including a "student grade" board that's a smidgen less expensive. The only problem with ordering from the online catalogue is that you'd have to order it 10 sheets or more at a time.

Watercolours on cardstock is working ok, but it is curling up the paper, but I'm going to buy watercolor paper, and some illustration board you told me about soon. Hopefully I'm getting a bunch of art supplies for my birthday in July, so I'll suggest some of the things you have told me about.
Thanks for all the help!!

Excellent, and you're welcome!
I'll keep an eye out for your new stuff. I'm sorry I haven't run through your gallery in a while to see your new work - I've been pretty busy drawing monsters at this end and my Watch queue is piling up rather dangerously...

Thank you muchly. I really dig the bright primary colors and I wanted to exploit that color scheme as much as I could in this picture.

I love the astral form of the image - how it's ballanced and designed. Once again, wonderful job!

Inspirational. I'm liking the way that you made the griffon look like a phoneix. The background is awsome as well.

This is simply amazing.....the detail....the background...I see this and I'm filled with the wooshing of wings against a backdrop of silence. Is this a personal piece for yourself, or are you planning on selling it?

rachaelm5 In reply to chibikenshin [2004-10-22 11:34:55 +0000 UTC]
I did make the piece for myself, as I was experimenting with the medium mish-mash at the time. But all of my art is potentially saleable, as I'm going to eventually run out of wall space in my house.
