_______________________________

Her axles felt weak, trembling beneath her as she struggled onward through the darkness. Dulled headlights, one particularly foggy due to lack of care, made it even more difficult to see as she squinted into the shadows ahead. Night was quickly falling upon the old streets of Cardinal's territory once more, and she felt anxiety bubble up within her tank - the night never brought good memories to girls like her.

She wasn't particularly old, by any means, but she felt broken. Aged beyond her years, her engine consistently straining, old split lines healing wrong and regularly re-injured from new punishments. This life... It hadn't been an easy one. It never got better, even if the pups she had reared had brought her a small amount of joy in her existence. They all grew up enough to no longer need her, rejecting her kindness and attempts at teaching them to be good, to be fair members of society... They all fell under the Cardinal's brain washing eventually. Her few children that had survived to adulthood paid her no mind, some even treating her cruelly. It had taken its toll, finding herself weaker and weaker, the deterioration had even begun to quicken as recent months passed.

And now, with no one to turn to for help as her body struggled, she had once again fallen pregnant.

It had hit her harder than any other time, crippling her into illness. She wasn't strong enough to carry another pup, even nearly all the males knew that, and had subsequently abandoned paying her any mind... Save for one. The one male that she hoped, as she watched his taillights break through the fog a safe distance ahead, would help her now.

If she managed to survive this pregnancy and birth, she knew - with a pang in her heart now as she thought of it - she wouldn't live long enough to raise this new baby. The child would end up alone, likely die, and she couldn't stand the idea. She didn't have much to lose any longer, any kin having left her for dead... So if this desperate last attempt for saving ended violently, at least she knew no one would miss her, and perhaps she was doing the unborn child a favor by keeping them from having to grow in the cruel world it would face.

The glowing Lincoln MKZ headlights ahead were her only guide through the shadows, and she followed quietly, unsure if the car ahead knew of her presence...

Her answer seemed to come in the form of an action, the dark colored vehicle suddenly slowing and turning into a darkened alleyway. For privacy, she guessed - though the freshly spray painted Cardinal symbol against the alley walls still loomed as an ever-present reminder to them both of who was in charge.

The Volvo sucked in a breath as she cautiously entered the shadowy turnout, watching ahead with a submission but hopeful gaze. As she expected, the Lincoln didn't spare her the effort of turning around to face her; it was never something that he had ever thought she deserved. She'd learned not to try to earn Fowler's respect, much less his love - their entire 'relationship' had begun with assault. There was no love between them, and there never would be, even if she had held hopes for years that perhaps he would change, and soften towards her.

But she had carried three strong pups for him throughout the years, all of which had survived, and thrived under Cardinal's rule. She was his favorite, his dove of choice, she had always heard. No, there was no relationship, no love, not even friendship between them, but she had always submitted. Never had she failed him, and she hoped that perhaps... Just maybe... He would find the empathy within him to spare her life and help her.

"I should be throwing you against this wall right now for following me," His harsh, gruff words echoed between the walls, and she flinched, immediately lowering her hood in submission and dropping her gaze - not that he cared to turn to look. He was right, she shouldn't have sought him out. However, the brown hues of his eyes seemed to glimmer as he glanced at his mirrors, watching the Volvo from them with a frown. "What do you want?"

She blinked, biting her lip cautiously and straightening herself. "I..." The Volvo found her voice weak, just like her trembling axles, taking a moment to try and form her words right. "I'm.. Expecting, again..." She began softly, shifting. She was too early to show, but the timing matched up - she only needed to confirm for the Lincoln what he already assumed. "Yours..."

There was little reaction, the male simply flicking his mirrors, his frown hardening as he studied her from his mirrors. It was a courtesy, sure, for a dove to inform a rook that he had fathered a pup... But not in the way she had. "What makes you think that justifies following me around?"

"O-Oh, no, no... That's... Not why I needed to speak to you,"
She spoke quickly, flicking her mirrors, though suddenly felt unsure about her purpose for coming here. The anxiety worsened, making her tank churn even more than it already did thanks to the morning sickness. For a moment, she felt as though she might be sick - backing away a little and staring at the ground.

It appeared to have an effect on the Lincoln, as he sighed and turned round to face her, letting himself be seen. The Volvo blinked, glancing up and meeting his gaze for a few quiet moments. There was a coldness to his eyes, but there almost seemed to be pity within them now... "I don't have all night, you know that. What is it?"

She forced herself to breathe, swallowing the bile that rose in her throat and gathering all her courage. This was for her child, THEIR child. She had to try. "Fowler... We... We both know I'm not going to make it out of this..." She breathed, studying his gaze for any further change. "My body is giving out, I can feel it... I'm not even sure I'll survive this pregnancy... But if I do, I don't stand a chance out here alone," The Volvo took a pause, waiting for him to scold her - but he stayed motionless, his gaze unchanging. "This baby... Our baby... Needs both of us. I can't do this alone, or I'll die within months, years if I'm lucky... And the child will be alone... And... We both know motherless pups rarely make it..." She felt her voice catch again, closing her eyes a moment to compose herself.

When she looked back up, it was to her surprise that Fowler had rolled closer to her, his expression difficult to read... but was that more pity she spotted, mixed within the cold brown of his eyes?

"Please... I need protection... Or else you may lose both your dove and your child," She finished in a whisper, staying as still as she could manage as the Lincoln reached her front.

He was silent, gazing deep into her blue gaze, seemingly searching her. Perhaps he was finding the kindness within himself to help her, to treat her better than everyone else in her life had... If there was anyone who would, it was Fowler. He was her last chance.

"Our child will live, you mustn't worry about that..." His tone had suddenly become much quieter, and she looked up with surprise as he reached to run a tire over her fender, the touch much gentler than she had known from others. "We've always produced the strongest pups, have we not?"

"Y-Yes... We have..." She began to feel hope, softening her eyes...

And it was then, that she realized her mistake.

He caught the softening, getting what he wanted, a small smirk beginning to appear on his features - though it wasn't a kind expression, instead filled with near distaste as he let her go. The Lincoln watched her with the cruel look of disgustful pity, a look almost worse than the sudden shock of rejection she was about to receive. "...But it doesn't matter if YOU survive," He mused simply, shaking his hood and backing away once more.

She watched in dismay as the Lincoln once more turned round, settling back into the shadowy corner of the alley. He now refused to even glance at her in his mirrors, instead staring straight ahead with a hardened gaze. "You've done your job well, and that I will give you credit for. But no dove has earned any protection if she holds the belief that she can DEMAND for it... It's pitiful, really..." He snorted, as her expression turned crestfallen, a sense of doom growing within her. "And that's the issue with you. You believe yourself to be the same as the males... And that will earn you nothing but pain and death. You brought yourself to this state. Perhaps I could have claimed you for my own, had you kept yourself from becoming the sad, broken whore you are now..." Fowler growled, before pausing.

It was then she felt herself tremble, gazing at the ground as his words stabbed into her.

She was going to die, and the one car that had ever spared her a second look was going to let it happen.

"I will ensure the pup lives. But I will not be your savior, Canary."

BACKSTORY SHIT

When Canary falls pregnant with Evonara, her youngest child, she knows that her time is quickly running out if she cannot find a savior or some form of an escape from her life. Her body is quickly giving out, and she can't stand the idea of leaving her baby to fend for itself alone...

One night, she becomes desperate enough to follow Evonara's father, a Lincoln that she shares other children with, to plead with him for his help. However, Fowler turns her away, refusing to assist her, and ultimately allowing her to die when she becomes to weak to carry on. He does, however, keep his promise to her by watching over little "Oriole" from a distance, ensuring that she grows to adulthood. He is somewhat caught off guard by how much Evonara resembles him, and secretly feels a bit of parental protectiveness over her, even if she never truly knows who he is - and hates him merely based off the fact he didn't save her mother when the time came.

Though he is a royal dick at the best of times, Fowler doesn't hate his children, and perhaps he secretly holds a soft spot for Canary... She was his "favorite", after all.
