Crazy bright inks! They're fun to play with once in awhile. And . . . hard to tone down actually. ^^' Thanks!

Oh WOW. The colour version of this one totally transformed this piece! Usually I like your line art equally as much as your colour, and find that they both have great depth - the colour more a sense of life and vibrancy, and the lines for a sense of composition and detail (even though they are in a sense the same image).

But this one. Wow.

The line art always makes me imagine the settings or tone, or at least the mood of the piece... I'm not sure what I was expecting with this one - but something more dreary, grey and almost scary. The scene of the werewolf and the chase made me expect something claustrophobic and hurried-feeling. Instead, that moonlight through the trees brings this into an entirely different spectrum. The sense of depth of field and space is radiant - it truly transformed the line art and opened this forest up. No longer were the details a cluster that was closing around the moving figures, but now they are a fleet moving in unison through a wide open and wild world. The sense of cramped urgency vanishes and is replaced with the joy of the hunt, of freedom, and of unity with nature.

Truly a stunning piece. <3

Eee, comments, I am a sucker for . . . words. Ignore mandy down there.

But yeah, I don't know if it was the different painting technique or just the color because I had to paint opaque/transparent instead of just transparent (which is more usual for me) in order to get that dark sky to work. I was so frustrated (personally) with the last time I did a dark sky that I wanted to be able to paint over the whole thing and be able to go back and paint into it with opaque paints which doesn't really work with watercolors so I did ink instead (I could have used goauche too). The opaque tends to interact with the linework more and covers some of it.

But I see what you mean, the whole open sky/moonlit night thing. There were several variations I considered: [link] and this is the one I went with. I think the feeling is a bit different in all of them. I usually do this for all of my paintings.

Thanks for the comment, it means a lot! <3

You have a Tumblr! *follows* I'm astracrompton on Tumblr ;3

I really like how much of a difference each of the colour selections makes! The winter one is quite pretty too, and while I like the lighting of the autumn sunset, it feels like the oranges/reds 'fight' too much with the green cape and neutral colours of the wolves and deer. And as for a beautiful spring day - there is something terribly eerie about a clash and chase in otherwise still and serene settings. The incongruity is unsettling. You definitely went with the best option - but it kind of hurts that you did all that extra work!

Do you do calendars ever? Your art would be a wonderful thing to monthly hang on my wall...

The digital tests are not so much extra work as a needed step. I actually do them for all of the paintings. There are generally four to seven color variations of all the big illustrations with different colors done in photoshop before I put paint to paper. Since I can't go back and color adjust after I've started painting it is my testing phase for the feeling I want to go for.

I've never done a calender, no, that would be neat though.

Interesting... I think that's part of the reason I shy away from traditional media - I have become addicted to my ctrl+z!

I think your style would be perfect for a sort of fable or nursery rhyme/fairy tale theme. I'm thinking of starting to put together a calendar in order to break down my Tarot card deck into manageable chunks!

Children's stories are my favourite, I admit. I don't know if I'd have the patience to do a whole calender . . . I set the most ridiculous projects for myself tho.

That's why you spread it out over a year~ Then you don't need to worry about burning out. I'm pretty bad for biting off way more than I can chew, so maybe taking my advice for projects is a bad idea!

I just picked up a beautiful hardcover book - the complete annotated works of Hans Christian Anderson! It has not only all of his kids stories, but all of his adult stories as well, and includes a large number of illustrations that hail from all different editions printed from around the world. I've got to say though, that my favourites are still the Harry Clarke ones.

What is this time management? Kidding. I am so busy!

I have read more Grimms than Hans Christian Anderson . . . Grimms gets a bit headcuttyoffy though so I should probably branch out more.

Hans gets a bit foot-cutty-offy, so I've begun to think it's just par for the course in fairy tales. Hans is responsible for all of my favourite fairy tales (with exception of Snow White & Rose Red and Beauty & the Beast). The Snow Queen, the Tinderbox, The Red Shoes, the Little Mermaid... He's also the bloke responsible for the Princess and the Pea, Cinderella, The Tin Soldier, the Matchstick Girl, Thumbelina, the Emperor's New Clothes...the list goes on and on.

Also, time management? It's an elusive unicorn that lurks in the corner of artist's rooms when they sit down to a project and then shifts the hours so that things you enjoy seem over too quickly and this you're supposed to be doing don't have enough time to get done. : P

Oh cutting off feet. Much better. People don't bleed out from that at all.

I can do time management it is like 'WHY SO MANY PROJECTS RACHEL?!'

tarorae In reply to RachelCurtis [2013-01-18 16:06:44 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeeeah, tell me about it. The interesting thing is they really weren't morally heavy-handed. I mean, a lot of people take them that way, but oftentimes the protagonist doesn't win, or some side character comes out on top, and others they get what they want and discover it's no good at all.... Someday I'll write a book of local fairy tales from my fantasy world - but that get's right back in there on the "WHY SO MANY PROJECTS ASTRA?!" since we both seem to swing that way. ;D
