They're all a lot bigger than what I had imagined in my mind. It's helpful for putting them in perspective in relation to one another. Some of the older Longwings looks as tall as houses! Little Ruskaer looks like maybe the size of a horse, although I don't think he would appreciate people riding him like one.

Yep, they're pretty big - is why the biggest Longwings need to use their novothermy to live. Something that size and warm blooded constantly would eat everyone else out of house and home! But it takes many, many years to get to that size. Most Longwings are around Kither's height when fully grown. Sparkclaws are generally a bit taller than Iyress.
Poor Rusk gettin' ridden like a horse.. I imagine he'd do it to not offend whoever asked, if he could support them, but it'd be a very awkward situation

I know this is an old message, but Longwings may not need to be changeable to survive. Dinosaurs were their size, and dinosaurs were most likely warm blooded as well.
There's a thing called Gigantothermy, which means that the larger something gets, the warmer their bodies can stay with fewer effort. Things like Great White Sharks are technically cold blooded, but they're so large their bodies stay fairly warm without effort. It's actually small animals that need to keep eating to stay warm. Shrews need to eat almost constantly to stay alive because they're so small and their metabolisms so fast.

That's true. Thanks for that information!
I went with the concept of novothermy on the thought of the scarcity of food. While they may be able to stay warm without a huge lot of effort, during periods of stress, lack of food, or illness, there might be a need to conserve energy. Think of Elephants who need to eat a heck of a lot of food a day to keep their big bodies running. While it's leaves and not meat, it's still comparable on some basis of just pure tonnage of the stuff, you know?
I can't really change canon now after a year or so, but thanks for the insight. I really do appreciate it!

You're welcome. I do think the novothermy is a great idea, it's just not many people know about things outside of warm and cold blooded. It's actually a lot more complicated than that.

Yeah. I never knew, myself, and it was kind of you to tell me otherwise Thank you, again!

Novothermy, I'm guessing it's a form of temperature control like exo- and endothermy? I'll have to google it. I notice the two royals in particular are in the upper reaches of height compared to the other main characters, I guess it's advantageous when trying to intimidate and dominate over feeble subordinates.
Lol! How kind of him, though I feel sorry that he feels he needs to be so passive and accommodating. And awkward indeed for both concerned; I don't see him as enjoying that sort of closeness or touch, and I can't imagine how the wing membranes on either side of him or the spikes along the length of his spine could be negotiated by the rider. xD

As I said in the note to you, novothermy's a word I made up, really. Novo means change in either latin or greek - it's the ability for Longwings (and some Sparkwings) to adjust their body temperature "style". They can 'turn it on' to generate their own heat or, in times of food shortage, turn it off to conserve energy. However, for the latter, they need another source of heat to not just freeze.
Yep, the Royals are also very old, but not ancient just yet. They'd have a lot more baggy skin if they were, and would look much less intimidating ;D
Oh boy, those spikes would hurt stickin' against your butt. Would need some new pants after that, probably!
