Description This is the test of Maxwell's subsurface scattering. Each head is a different style of doing ss work. The single ss head spec map is a little high, in the other renders I turned down the spec. The single ss has the best color, blue ss has a nice solid feel, classic has a thickness the others don't. Classic ss is also the hardest to get correct color. Blue ss has a cold feel to it.

All renders are Maxwell's thin ss. Normal (thick) ss takes a 7 days to render on my small dual core computer. Thin ss takes only a day.

I know this is an old post, but looks quite a good job. wondering if you would share the settings for maxwell (maybe the whole scene

I've found thin sss to be a dead end. I've been playing around with Meinbdender Plasticine maxwell material. The results are amazing. Thick ss looks better then thin ss. The mxm material is at CG Society.
Check out CG Society link www.cgsociety.org/index.php/CG…
Hold on.....
This is what I've created. Four + layers

Spec (the additive layer at 10%)
nd 1.5 w/ force fresnel
rough at 10

A color layer at 5%
This is to put some color back in. Optional.

Thick sss at 50%
Reflectance 0 & 90 at pure black. The skin color in the Transmittance.
Attenuation at 4mm (between 2-4mm looks good)
nd 1.3
rough 83.47
Scattering (medium gray)
Coef 1200
Asymmetry 0.200

Shinny Layer (additive) 20%
Reflectance 0 pure black
Ref 90 blue (90, 112, 143)
Trans Pure Black
nd 2
rough 22

Bottom Layer 100%
Color in Ref 0 & 90
Nd 3
Rough 95

Hit render and go on vacation. This material takes forever... but looks fantastic.

The 3 zones of color. I forgot about that.
