Description ...and after yet another minor hiatus (Screw you, work!) I finished a gift for Redwall151 on the day of her birthday, coincidentally.

Mustelid cartographists burning the midnight dragon oil laying out surveys, sextant readings and checking against cosmographists' reports to create the best maps yet seen.

This was meant to be a collaborated illustration project for a book that is not going to be. The other illustration meant to go into it was this .

Aside from Redwall151 's character, Aleutia , I included two other characters, loosely based on Redwall151 's friends' Han-Wik 's and Nivailis ' characters and it's going to be a trope I'll be using from now on - Whenever I draw a picture I will throw in extra characters chosen in random for kicks and giggles.

Oh, it is art for Vultur_Martes's mustelid book?
I remember, you told with him about this.
Did you know that "The culture of Noble Mustelids" will not print? We are very sorry.

Hi! It is exactly as you say. The bad news is I hear Martes passed away. I have no way of varifying it and I heard it from a guy who has heard it from a guy. At any case, Martes does not respond to any of our messages.

That's right, he died. I am his closest friend. I witnessed his death.

Beautiful picture and a very interesting composition of patterns and colors. Makes one wish to be there working with them.

I can see how one would want to get busy with three girls. Serious now, thank you for your positive comment. It means a lot from you. My medium is not a friend with a real-world palette like yours is, but at least it lends itself to some interesting effects. It real life renditions that is a struggle.

Lovely work, Rados!  Glad you are back, and with a stunning piece.  I'm really enjoying the colors you chose for the background and the colors you used to show light and shadow on the characters.

Thank you! Getting paid job sounded great at first, but I didn't realize what toll it would take on my free time activities, most noticably drawing. I can only hope I can carry on making more.

It took me a long time to get work and life in sync so that I have time for drawing again. Having all those work together I feel as good as I haven't in a while.

I know you are going through more demanding times yourself and that it impacted your life in a way like mine was, though less time for art is maybe not as hard respectfully. Let me wish you good health, reasonable amout of luck and good doing for your birthday and your new upcoming future!

It's so nice of you! Thank you for including me. When I saw it is traditional I couldn't believe! These colors are amazing! What media did you used? What's it's size? There are not many impressionists, I'm Impressed! I especially like the cloth- its pattern and gloss, and colors in the background- looking like a kaleidoscope.

Thank you! Liz always had only nice things to say of you, so you were an obvious candidate, even though it's not quite your thing.

The picture is standard A4 format drawn in tempera paint. I am pretty sure you can get it just as readily as I can. It's good to work with and cheap. Colours may be a bit more radiant than they really are, but that's only because my scanner spits it out like that with the real thing not so far off.

By the way, green heart on red ribbon - genius. I really like that idea.

Your work is stunning as always. The textures and patterns are fascinating. The radiant light and optical blending on the far wall is particularly mesmerizing, though the characters came out great, as well.

Keep up the awesome work!

Thank you! Been really struggling with quite a few new things in this picture alone and looking back at it, it astounds me how well some bits turned out.

Say, I finally organized my life around my work to have time to draw again. I only have a couple of pictures to finish and since I always liked you, would you like a picture from me, too? It would keep me practising.

You're welcome. And I love your art so much! That would really be an honor. I would love to make it an art trade and draw something for you, too, but that could take forever since I make art so slowly...

I am not exactly fast in producing pictures eigher and there are the few pictures to finish first... Anyway, write me a note with your ideas. In your special case I am sure I won't make you wait that long.

From the start of this piece, I was so curious how the radiant atmosphere would turn out...and needless to say, turn out it did! I just love the color and ornamentation here. Your contrast really brings out the detail. Aleutia is definitely a sea-girl, so she could easily find herself out on a ship! He unusual clothing style is fun to see You have a knack for patterns. Thank you so much for this lovely gift! I hope one day I can see it in person from the badger himself!

Been a while making it, but I am happy with it now, growing more on me. I have done few things first time in my life there and glad they turned the way they did.

This was such a sudden and nice surprise! Your brush strokes and palette is very distinctive and instantly recognizable from the other artists I follow and talk to on a regular basis. It makes me want to be bolder in my choice of colour and try out different settings/environments.

While two of these weasels may not be exactly the characters they are based on, I enjoy seeing mustelids portrayed in various ways. It's not often that they're represented in art, and they're some of my all-time favourite animals ever. A stoat suits me nicely right now- I'm currently writing a tribute to the species and have been doing extensive research on them.

Thank you so much!

RadosBadger In reply to Han-Wik [2016-03-03 20:22:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know you would normally not depict your stoat in this way, but I heard only praises from Liz about you and couldn't but to include you in there. She also has been great keeping the secret.

Glad you like how it looks! Not sure your natural scenes would use anything but natural palette. I get away easy with these crazy tones, but for the sake of experiment we would be interested what you would get us to see.

Han-Wik In reply to RadosBadger [2016-03-03 21:09:14 +0000 UTC]

No problem! I really appreciate that you included me, and like I've already mentioned I love stoats in general. Liz has been an excellent keeper of secrets- you totally succeeded in surprising me, and I'm sure Nivailis feels the same way. We're all very dedicated to the weasel family, so I'd like to think of it as a tribute to the artists as well as our characters and the animals we love.

Thank you. : ) The saturated and earthly colours I normally use suit the realistic theme I've chosen for my stories, and I do love to depict nature just the way it is. Not to say nature can't be colourful, though!
However,  I'm also an appreciator of surrealism, expressionism and more whimsical work- perhaps because it is so different from my usual fare. I'd like to try out a different approach with colours and artistic expression one day, but right now I'm a little short on ideas.
