hmm, neither one or another, though rather the second approach
a lot of fun with lights and shadows in lightroom and something like "tonal mapping" (but this is too big word to name it this way)

tonal mapping is hdr for my understanding
at least this is what i do with my different exposures....
whatever, it's a very nice and well postprocessed work, mate!
