Description

Cailleach Bheur- the Weather Witch

"Winter howls and wind does moan
With Cailleach’s staff frost is sown." -Richard de Graeme (excerpt from his poem "Winter's Grief").

In Scottish mythology, one of the names she is known by is Cailleach Bheur. She is the Weather Witch- known as the bearer of storms and the bringer of cold and frost. I have used some artistic licence in this image- she is known to appear most often as an old crone- but she must have been youthful once, right? Cailleach Bheur is known to always carry with her a wooden staff, and has a strong association with wolves and oak branches.

The background image of Eilean Donan Castle is mine, from a photograph I took on the shores of Loch Duich, Scotland. It is now available as a stock image from my stock account

All other images and textures are my own, with the exception of:
Model: Wolf: Grimoire: Branch: Apple Blossoms: Staff: Flying birds and trees:

I think it is entirely appropriate to present her in this form, honey! As with most of the more prominent female members of the Tuatha de Danann, she has been said to have three different forms, that of Maiden, Mother, and Crone. I love how this piece captures the awe-inspiring, sweetly sad beauty of winter! Masterful!

Thank you, milady! I'm glad you like this piece~ it was one of my very first PS attempts, and I was well pleased with the way it turned out

I had my castle photograph hidden away in a file on my computer, and after a lazy afternoon spent flipping through the pages of one of my Celtic mythology books, I thought I ought to have a crack at creating a piece that allowed me to indulge my fetish for all things Celtic I actually had this pic printed and framed~ it's hanging on the wall in my hallway

So... an Austenian (or Janeite ) and a lover of Celtic mythology?! I am hugely impressed by your most excellent taste It's a pity we don't live in the same hemisphere~ then we could get together for coffee and a geek-fest

In my opinion, an excellent choice of subjects! The Cailleach ( or Beira, as she is also known) doesn't really get enough love in the artistic world. Sad, really. I wonder why?

I must confess to being an enthusiast (not necessarily an expert, mind you!) of at least 7 different mythologies, Celtic being my most enduring favorite, and Persian being my newest fascination ( the latest mini-blurb I've been working on is based on such).

Honey, isn't that the beauty of the internet? 'Tis why the godz of the internetz made IM servers! Still, you do present a valid point, time zones is pure kookyness, that they certainly is. Aye Weil, Que sera, sera!

Why, thank you, milady! I was fairly keen to find a fairly obscure myth to work with... not only because I personally find it more interesting, but also because people have pre-conceived ideas as to what the more popular mythological figures look like, like Artemis, for example.

Celtic mythology is definitely at the top of my list... followed by the Vikings I adore Persian art, though I must admit to not knowing a great deal about their mythology Perhaps I should address this distinct lack of knowledge?!!!

Oooooh, I would certainly recommend it! It's positively bursting with romance and adventure, with mysterious deavas, noble heros, who's exploits match that of herculean tales, and glorious mythical beasts, like the phoenix! *siiii~gh!* It's a mythology-lover's dream come true!

Considering what she does, you would imagine her a not very nice young lady but she looks very appealing out there in the rain. That's a very attractive wolf. The desolation of the scene is beautifully evoked by the landscape and that castle. What a grim looking place. It looks to be the home of many a dark deed and the bane of many a pretty Gothic heroine - perfect place to eat your haggis while freezing and hearing strange sounds. I wonder if she's using the foul weather to curse the place.

And re: the haggis... I guess I'd probably feel like her too if that was all that was on the menu (It's definitely not a favourite of mine!)
