Description
Created using my own photograph of Eilean Donan Castle, Dornie, by Kyle of Lochalsh, Scotland.
"Caledonia"
Caledonia! thou land of the mountain and rock,
Of the ocean, the mist, and the wind-
Thou land of the torrent, the pine, and the oak,
Of the roebuck, the hart, and the hind;
Though bare are thy cliffs, and though barren thy glens,
Though bleak thy dun islands appear,
Yet kind are the hearts, and undaunted the clans,
That roam on these mountains so drear!
A foe from abroad, or a tyrant at home,
Could never thy ardour restrain;
The marshall'd array of imperial Rome
Essay'd thy proud spirit in vain!
Firm seat of religion, of valour, of truth,
Of genius unshackled and free,
The muses have left all the vales of the south,
My loved Caledonia, for thee!
Sweet land of the bay and wild-winding deeps
Where loveliness slumbers at even,
While far in the depth of the blue water sleeps
A calm little motionless heaven!
Thou land of the valley, the moor, and the hill,
Of the storm and the proud rolling wave-
Yes, thou art the land of fair liberty still,
And the land of my forefathers' grave!" ~ by James Hogg, (1770-1835) Scottish poet and novelist. Source: www.rampantscotland.com/poetry…

Yeah I do thanks..well a massive log burner that could power half of Europe.
Its been totally chaotic here over the past two weeks with Arctic Conditions. I don't fancy living in a drafty old castle at the moment.
Are you of Scottish ancestry?
Did you take the original pic of the castle?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
RagamuffinRose In reply to FalseMaria [2010-12-10 09:08:40 +0000 UTC]
Well... it sure does sound like your log burner is up to the challenge before it! Fortunately!
The weather over there has been on our news a quite a bit~ what a season you are having! Quite apart from the day to day challenges it must bring, I pity those having to travel.
As for the castle~ I was there in spring of last year (with the worst flu ever!) and I thought it was freezing then. (So yes, the photo is mine ) Short of an inferno, I very much doubt that you could warm up the castle to a liveable temperature- even if they had your log burner in their possession!
As for my Scottish heritage, alas... I have none, that I know of anyway. I have researched my family history fairly extensively and found nothing! I think that I must be one of those very rare Australians without any blood ties to Scotland (and the bulk of my family arrived here in 1792 with the 2nd fleet). I do however, have a love of all, well, nearly all, things Scottish, haggis being one very notable exception , and it is without doubt, one of my favourite places on the planet
I've been lucky enough to have visited your country three times in the past decade, and none of it's magic has been lost on me

Well in that case, if you took the pic I am well impressed. Nice work.
The weather was much colder in those days too due to a mini ice age.so they must have spent the winter months shivering and never being warm I guess.
Glad you have enjoyed your trips to Scotland ..it is a pretty special place I think to. Where have you enjoyed visiting most?

RagamuffinRose In reply to FalseMaria [2010-12-10 09:46:58 +0000 UTC]
Why, thank you!
Mind you, 'tis hard to mess up a photo of that castle!
I agree that the castle residents must have spent their days shivering, and waiting for spring to arrive. Eilean Donan in particular... all that stone... and relatively tiny fireplaces! Best place to be was likely the kitchen... by the fire
Gosh...so far as having a favourite place to have visited in Scotland... that is a difficult choice indeed! I am not overly fond of cities, and whilst I had a wonderful time in Edinburgh, in particular, everything north of there was fairly well impressive Scotland has such a diverse landscape, so every corner of it has something new, and wonderful to offer
Perhaps I shall just have to keep going back until I can settle on something!

I am not overly fond of cities either and live in a little village up a hillside...we have spectacular mountain views across the valley.Looking particularly impressive at the moment in the snow and bright chill.
Have you ever visited Orkney? If you like neolithic sites it is hard to beat ...full of interesting things....

RagamuffinRose In reply to FalseMaria [2010-12-12 00:43:17 +0000 UTC]
That would be quite a spectacular view, to be sure, and sounds like an amazing place to live! Snow is quite a exotic thing for me It does snow in Australia, but it is confined to particular geographical regions, and elsewhere, if it does snow at all, it tends to be very patchy and short-lived. 'Tis nothing at all compared to what you must be used to! I think that one day I must brave the weather and get myself over there and see it first hand
With a very, very warm coat on, of course!
I have never visited Orkney~ but it is VERY high on my list of places to visit I don't doubt that my camera and I would have a wonderful time!

We don't really get a lot of snow in all honesty...this winter and last winter have been pretty unusually snowy and cold.
Yep ..Orkney is well worth a visit ..there are more neolithic sites there per square mile than anywhere else in the world I think . Standing stones and burial mounds and even a neolithic village.
There is a pretty famous one called Maes Howe ..the sun on the winter solstice shines down the entrance tunnel and illuminates a special niche..only at this time of the year. There are all sorts of interesting things inside..the construction is fascinating enough but there is even Viking graffiti ..' i am a viking writing high up" it says in runes.Haha.
There is a web cam that they set up at this time of year but I don't think they have managed to do it so far..here is the web address.. [link]

I imagine that not having an awful lot of snow would be a relief~ despite the cold! I would hate to have to drive to work in it everyday... I expect it would become something of a chore after a while. As for your odd weather patterns~ it's summer here, but so far, you wouldn't know it~ it has been more like an extended spring~ not that I mind at all~ there's less chance of bushfire, and I am not especially fussed about the heat
Thanks for sending me the link~ 'tis an amazing site! (Both the website and Maes Howe!) You are so very lucky to have so much history about you. Seems I shall have to save my pennies and come back for a visit!!!

Wow! A departure for you, to be sure! I love how the main keep seems to indeed rise from the mists. Lovely all around, and kudos to you, m'lady for this and for never staying wifhin your comfort zone. You stretch and explore as artists are supposed to do, and so often do not, choosing instead to take the broad and spacious path that leads to mediocrity.

Thanks, Rae!
Told ya I was going to do something new! I'm glad you like it
And thank you for your seriously awesome sauce comment~
it has provided me with yet another excuse to exploit my favourite plz
As for my comfort zone... I am not entirely convinced that I left it, so much as crawled back into it, in that I am doing what I want to do, rather than what I think I ought As for the exploration, hells yeah! And rejecting mediocrity? Absolutely! (I try to anyways, as much as my own ability will permit...
)
