Description "Alduin bane of kings"

(You better download it to get the best impression, especially of Alduin.)

Dovahkiin facing Alduin.. just an idea of how I'd imagine an epic final battle could be.

Skyrim... such an amazing province in such an amazing universe!
Looking trough the artbook accompanying the Collector's Edition, You are left in awe by all the details and amazing designs..

While taking a break from studies I put this on the digi-canvas while having the inspiration.
Rough greyscale painting and some color and light effects.

Any opinions?

I've never played Skyrim, but I know the gist of it, and this is seriously cool.

All have their level within artistic fields, and with practice one can achieve a level one never would believe possible for one self... It only requires practice and patience, observation of the world around and how it works, and of course, the passion and aspiration to explore understand and embrace art in all its ways.

So I've been playing Skyrim a bit again, though it's hard to do so with 8 hour workdays throughout most of the week. So far, while the game world is impressive, I'm of the opinion that future games in that vein could do a better job of balancing character builds and encounters.

Some of the questlines, in my opinion start off really easy, then all of a sudden start putting you in very difficult battles where you neither have the skills nor equipment to advance - which breaks immersion if you have to go grind for 5-10 levels before returning to the quest. Of course there are overpowered builds (In this case, enchanting/smithing/alch - that was new to me. Coming from Dragon Age/The Witcher/Fallout 3, crafted and enchanted equipment/potions were hardly overpowering), but ideally I'd like to see a game where metagaming makes less of an impact on strategy/outcome.

On a side note, I got my pre-purchase for Guild Wars 2. Missed the beta weekend for last month, but I'll be sure to catch the one coming up this month (though I missed the stress test last week, was playing SKyrim and didn't notice A-net's announcement, ha).

My friend, I am terribly sorry not being able to reply before now, so please accept my apologies!

The past three months flew by and suddenly we are closing the end of July.

I had an artstand at a convention in Oslo, so all of my time in the last days of May and half of June went to sculpturing and costume making (I will post some pics eventually).
I passed the math, passed the animation study application tasks, and made it among the 10 of 200 applicants for the study, so now I am going to find an apartment to move into and get started on the Bachelor Degree in Animation in august.

Other than that I am working on the commissioned Ganondorf sculpture and a Cover for the "HybridTwo" [link] composer's Virtual Instrument Collection.

So I still find myself increasingly more occupied by work to do

I do certainly agree with you concerning the matters of Skyrim, I experienced something like facing a ghost that killed me off in one blast of his frost spells or sword strike.. even at the easiest difficulty I didn't stand a chance!

So, how have the past few month been treating you?

Hey no problem at all.

Congrats! Sounds like some exciting stuff.

Pretty good. Been working, but I'm going to be playing the final Guild Wars 2 beta event tomorrow. Played the last one in June. Game releases on the 28th of August (25th for us prepurchasers), though the coming school semester is going to be heavy since I'll be juggling job apps and thesis (economics/law related - antitrust laws in the US).

Thank you, it is exciting, yet increasingly hectic.

Judging from the anticipation I've noticed around the game, as well as the amazing visual directions by Kekai Kotaki, I do believe it is a game worth the wait and time to be spent on... As well providing inspirational experiences.

Does indeed sound heavy...

Yea. Kekai left the team though to pursue his own path. He's been with ANet a while though.

Hmm I wasn't aware, however, i saw ImagineFX holding an art contest, of which the category focused on Game Art is to be judged by Kekai himself. In addition to a variety of prizes, your talent will be noted by people in the business.. given you make something he finds interesting of course.

Could be interesting [link]

TheDrowningEarth In reply to Ragaru [2012-08-04 00:07:18 +0000 UTC]

Anyhow, I take it you're gunning up for it? I definitely think you're one of the stronger artists I've seen and you'd be more ready for it than I am.

Might be time to get some visualize Project EXO/Lost Legend/Wraith stuff (or any one of your other universes) in there and make what you can out of it. I think utilizing something from your own original storylines would definitely give you an edge over some generic sci-fi/fantasy entry.

Ragaru In reply to TheDrowningEarth [2012-08-04 00:55:50 +0000 UTC]

It's tempting, and my creativity is urging for it, still I fear I might be out of practice, hopefully that'll come back once I get to start on a greater piece.

Putting some of my stories into focus would indeed prove an ideal opportunity for this contest, as I believe the concepts themselves would suit the game medium well enough.

I have it all in my head, getting it to the canvas shouldn't be the greatest challenge, but offering a convincing and captivating rendering of my ideas would prove most challenging... as well as time of course.

I would at least encourage you to give it a shot as well, given time is at your side, it could turn out as a great practice as well as an opportunity to get your art and ideas exposed.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheDrowningEarth In reply to Ragaru [2012-08-04 06:01:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, perhaps I can. It's just a matter of thinking something up. Though exposure doesn't really matter much to me at this stage - there'll be a time for it, when I set things in motion.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

TheDrowningEarth In reply to Ragaru [2012-08-03 23:58:53 +0000 UTC]

That is something. It's been a while since I've done anything for a contest. Creativity is one thing, getting the execution is another.

Well, at least it concludes in mid-October. Plenty of time, though it's probably beyond my ability, knowing how popular IFX is.

Ragaru In reply to TheDrowningEarth [2012-08-04 00:44:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, buying ImagineFX from time to time, there isn't always what I'd call top class art, sure there might be good executions and etchniques displayed, but designs and unique styles are rare.

I wouldn't say it's beyond your abilities, the scale you work on and the amount of detail you can put into a piece, is something for itself.

But yes, execution may at times be the hardest part of a piece, be it the composition, coloring or perspective/depth... It is however what we need to keep practicing on to overcome.

TheDrowningEarth In reply to Ragaru [2012-08-04 00:53:56 +0000 UTC]

That's what I feel about some things that I see today. Technically, it's wonderful and very detailed, but the impact and aesthetic leaves a bit to be desired.

Personally, I think that the final battle with Alduin should've been one-on-one, not with three other heroes helping you. Kind of takes away the epicness.

Ragaru In reply to kitsune2008 [2012-05-01 15:01:34 +0000 UTC]

Never fought the final battle so I wouldn't know.. but one-on-one would indeed be the most epic way.

The werewolf won.

Werewolves are nice.

Fallout is more in depth perk-wise, and with levels, and enhancements, but you have guns mostly, and I think that Bethesda also made Fallout like they made Skyrim, so the navigation and hud's are a little similar, especially with the slow motion critical kills and such, so yeah, it's pretty cool.

Nope, also I am not strict at how my art may be used. Unless it's a profitable situation, or other taking credit for it, I'm just glad to see others find it interesting and creatively useful(obviously )

Anyway, thanks for letting me know, and thank you for the compliment, It does indeed take time, and patience is only to find if you've got enough inspiration and thus motivation
