Description Deviation #2!
If you have questions regarding why I make charts, please refer to my first deviation "The seven deadly sins of youtube"'s description. I apologize in advance to those of you who don't know what Gunnerkrigg Court is. Here's the Info: Gunnerkrigg Court is a Urban Fantasy webcomic written and illustrated by Tom Siddell. It can be found here: www.gunnerkrigg.com I recommend reading it. Go on, I'll wait.
And now, without any further ado, the description.

Lawful Good: James "Jim" Eglamore
Eglamore is a teacher at the Court, and abides by the rules. He also has saved Annie on multiple occasions, and acts heroic in general.
Others that would fit this alignment: George "Smitty" Smith, Donald and Anja Donlan

Neutral Good: Katerina Maria "Kat" Donlan
Kat usually follows the rules, but breaks them on occasion, and acts overtly heroic in general, specifically towards Robots and Birds.
Others that would fit this alignment: The Guides, Gamma, Paz Cadena-Blanco

Chaotic Good: George Parley
Parley is good, and shows it by volunteering as a medium. The way she goes about it, and her personality both show that she is uncontrollable and chaotic. Therefore, chaotic good.
Others that would fit this alignment: Surma Carver

Lawful Neutral: Jones
Jones isn't particularly heroic in any way, but works for the court and adheres to and enforces the rules.
Others that would fit this description: The Tic-Tocs, Headmaster Llanwellyn

True Neutral: Antimony "Annie" Carver
Annie has a healthy respect for the rules, but breaks them on occasion. And while she has done some selfless work for the court as a medium, she has done some rather petty selfish things, such as steal or cheat on tests. She also doesn't go out of her way to help, but rather stumbles upon issues. She is heading towards neutral good, however.
Others that would fit this alignment: Shadow 2, Robot S13, Basil, Mort, Janet Llanwellyn, Tea

Chaotic Neutral: "Renard" Reynardine
Renard starts of as a dick, but through character development begins to show he cares about people. He doesn't follow the rules, though.
Others that would fit this alignment: Jack Hyland, William Winsbury, Zimmy, Red, Blue

Lawful Evil: Diego
One of the founders of the court, he betrayed the woman he loved and sent her to her death.
Others that would fit this alignment: Steadman

Neutral Evil: Ysengrin
While he follows orders, they are given by a chaotic master. And while his mind is warped, his actions are usually neutral evil.
Others that would fit this alignment: Jeanne

Chaotic Evil: Coyote
A classic trickster, he also hides a dickish side that *spoilers* is revealed when it is revealed he has been the reason Ysengrin is so messed-up.
Others that would fit this alignment: The Denizens of Fun City, Boxbot. Because he's terrible.

The temptation to read the comments is high but I can contain the temptation. I am going to read it and then I am going to post a comment right here, meanwhile I am not going to read any comment of this fan art.

I honestly believe that Coyote and Jones are both alien enough not to fit on the alignment chart, lying instead along the 'purple-orange' axis.

Where can I find this? Looks interesting. The animal at the bottom reminds me of Redwall Characters. I might need to look this up.

None of those quotes except for Diego's have anything to do with why they got their alignment--not even Ysengrin, as much as it might look like it on the surface, as he's commenting about something he did while mind-controlled--and Ysengrin (at the very least) is pretty much randomly placed. I'd argue if anything he and Deigo ought to switch places--he shows distinct "lawful" (in the alignment sense) tendencies in his continued loyalty to Coyote.

I don't actually think he was mid controlled during that. Isn't he just not very well in the head and kinda flipped at Annie? Coyote just destroyed the memory.

I would say that Paz Cadena-Blanco is, in fact, Good. In the chapter "A Bad Start", we learn that she's gone out of her way to help the animals that are being used for testing and try to make them comfortable. She also comforts Kat, even though she had no obligation to- these seem like Good actions to me.

Two of some of my favorite things! Gunnerkrigg court and Alignments! Coupled with some of the best quotes in the comic!

Actually, these fit well. I would make an argument for Annie slanting towards NG, but I see you already made that, so.... carry on

I disagree. Ysengrin isn't evil, he's just hostile toward humans, whom he sees as untrustworthy and a danger to the forest. And he's extremely devoted to Coyote, partly because the knows that Coyote is much more powerful than he is and partly because he has issues with his self-image.
Coyote himself, well. He's a trickster, yes, but he has a sizable history of being helpful also. I don't think it's fair to say he's completely evil.
Boxbot....unfortunate. Not much else to say.

The problem with making an alignment chart for Gunnerkrigg is that there aren't many clear-cut evil-doers in it. So I had to put some more morally-ambiguous character into the "Evil" alignments.

BrightBlueWindWitch In reply to RagingCleric [2012-11-19 19:26:41 +0000 UTC]

Of course, one can argue that that fact is something that makes Gunnerkrigg so good, that its characters are not just flat personality archetypes you can put in a box. For every little thing that doesn't fit the mold, they gain a level of complexity, a level of reality.

On the other hand.... if you're just looking for evil dudes, how about the Creepy Space Aliens From Outer Space?

now there's Hetty for Evil. Though I don't know if she's lawful or chaotic... She was trying to kill her "owner", but was still bound by the "ownership contract"

That is what makes Gunnerkrigg so good. I just like to categorize things.

Oh, and I only used recurring characters for it.
