Description This is a commission for a girl and her significant other. Each figure represents one of them. They unfortunately have to spend a lot of time apart, as they live in different areas. The idea behind this sculpture is that they each look good by themselves (so each person can have one) but when they come together they complete each other.

The fox is about 5" x 3.75" x 3.5". The cat is 5.25" x 3.5" x 2.5". They are both made of sculpey over an armature of aluminum foil and wire, and painted with acrylics.

Your sculptures are always so pretty! I could just stare at them, searching and finding all kinds of little details I never noticed. They have such sweet expressions too ;-;

Aw...that's such a cute idea ^^ I have had to spend a lot of time away from my significant other, so I know what that's like.

Your attention to detail is incredible, the fur and the wings are amazing.

Out of curiousity, what kind of varnish do you use on them?

rah-bop In reply to jiangzu [2008-10-01 01:30:49 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I use Liquitex pouring medium. It's probably not the best varnish to use, but it's handy and I like the look ...and it's what I have on hand. XD Occasionally I also use a spray-on varnish in a can, but off the top of my head I can't tell you what brand it is. Probably something generic and cheap.

This is such a sweet concept, and so well-sculpted. The wings are brilliant, as are the spots on the cat, and their expressions are perfect.

how do you sculpt these? also, is sculpty clay the stuff you bake?

do you use a mold and add wings or is the entire sculpture original?

I'm fascinated with how you make these. I am just a noob at using clay -- but I am using real clay right now and making stuff on a potter's wheel.

I would like to learn how to do this.

Yep, sculpey is a polymer clay that stays soft until you bake it in the oven.

I make everything from scratch! First I moosh up a blob of aluminum foil and wire into a rough shape, to give it structure and strength, and then I cover it completely with sculpey. I sculpt in all the details by hand and then bake and paint it.

If you're interested in working with sculpey, here is a great tutorial.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING TUTORIAL!

thanks so much for the link.

hey! what happens to the aluminum inside the sculpture once you bake it?

or do you take it out before you bake it?

Nothing happens to the aluminum at all... except I imagine it probably warms up a bit when it's in the oven, but it doesn't transform or anything. The temperature that you bake it at is low enough that you could make an armature out of anything that doesn't melt. You could use paper, wood, thread, glass, epoxy, etc. I've heard of some people being able to bake sculpey using a hair dryer, but I don't know if it's true and I don't endorse it! XD

The trick to sculpey figures is to make as much of it out of foil as possible, so that you're only covering the surface with sculpey, only about 1/4-1/2 inches deep. That way you waste less clay (it can be pricy!) and I've found that the thicker the clay is, the more prone the figure is to cracking as it ages.
