The first Dakosaurus material was just teeth, so I guess they thought ‘Hmm, big reptile teeth = Megalosaurus’. Plateosaurus I think was the worst typo in the history of palaeontology. There’s a fair few other crazy stories behind other taxa I didn’t even mention. For example, Cope briefly lumped Ceratosaurus into Megalosaurus purely to piss off Marsh.
