The first toy dinosaur I ever owned was a small grey Tyrannosaurus rex. I first got it when I was around two years old with a bag of other toy animals, and it was my first exposure to a dinosaur. One of my earliest childhood memories is of my grandad pointing out this little toy and telling me that it was a dinosaur, ingraining the idea of dinosaurs in my mind from an early age and beginning a lifelong love for palaeontology. I still have that toy all these years later. And so, to celebrate the long path it helped lead me on, and the life and influence of my late grandad, who passed away recently, here is the grey T. rex, restored as a living individual; intensely sniffing the air so as to almost recapture the outdated pose of the original. A lifetime of passion for the ancient world, leading to becoming a published palaeontologist, and it all began with this little dinosaur, and the words of my grandad, who I will love and remember always.
