Wow, Graphite? I don't even want to know how long it took to figure out the waves of the water. @_@
Love the way the different textures actually look like what they should. <3

good work dude..i am an amateur photographer..but so don't mind me commenting on your work..i like this one a lot from your gallery because of its originality..and i assume you must have put some time into this one. the other portraits in your gallery are good but i think you somehow miss the scale sometimes< as in the proportion> its not a lack of skill. just be more accurate when you reproduce known faces...build your own way of measuring facial features. i am not as good at sketching as you but you could take a point between the eyes on the root of your nose as a reference point..measuring can then be done either in the form of grids. or sometime i have seen diagonal lines being helpful..i had to use those to stay in scale..with time with talent like yours u may not need them..take care..and keep sketching

hey thanks a lot dude.. ya i know i sometimes get out of scale... iv actually never used grids at all, so im trying to use them now to get the perfection..

penicil n detailin work is jus amazing..!!!.. but i guess you could work on the composition.. the way the water is splashing looks a bit unrealistic..

Visual artists amaze me. Particularly ones who can draw so well..! It is a mystery to me how you do it, but I can definitely say that the motion of the water is just beautiful. Water has that almost untouchable property that makes it beautiful, and you recreated it so splendidly..!

Oh yeh, I forgot. I was reading about Simzz talking about the grid method. I have tried that myself but what I prefer is to work upside down...that is have both the reference photos and painting upside down which forces me to see the subject as abstract shapes and colours rather than recognizable objects...I don't continuously work on the whole painting like this but I find it is useful. Also, hold you drawing (or painting) to a mirror once in a while, this will enable you to see mistakes more clearly.

and plz dont think i dismiss Picasso's work as nothing! I just like realism much more... I respect him and his work, like all artists do!

There's a lot of shit art out there and admit I don't get a lot of it...a lot of it I think is bullshit. But I try not to dismiss stuff offhand. I always reach the conclusion that it's bullshit after careful consideration.

thanks.. i'll think about what u said about keeping an open mind! and thanks for the suggestions.. i also try the same things, doing it upside down and using the mirror to get mistakes.. although iv never tried the grid method.. coz its very tiring! thanks for viewing my work!

The only suggestion I can give you is to keep working seriously...if you are determined you will smooth out any rough edges in your work but keep in mind that most good artists are never satisfied with their works. I think Michelangelo has been quoted on his deathbed as saying "Damn, now I die?? And I'm only now starting to get good"....to paraphrase. After reading a bit of the dialogue between Simzzz and yourself I have to say don't be dismissive of the works of artists like Picasso...I used to be dismissive of art I didn't understand too. Try to understand why those artists had such a huge influence. In hindsight it's easy to say "I could do that" but the point is nobody did it before. Picasso has done everything..his work was very representational when he was young. I'm not a big fan of all art, I don't "get" a lot of it...but I always try to keep an open mind. I think that to have a closed mind about all the different styles of art will only stunt your growth as an artist.

hey thanks a million Katarina! for the smiles too... ya i agree with the fact too u know, but i guess cubism.. invented by the genius Picasso is something which is to be appreciated like Realism, another form of art.. but i also think, from my perspective, that cubism is more into philosophy than art.. There are graphite geniuses like Armin Mersmann in the world, which in my opinion, r quite better than Picasso, himself... well everybody has the right to put his opinion, do dont blame me! Armin's work is like a wow factor of 10, not only because of the astounding realism, but also because of the feelings he imparts in his drawings.. they r exceptional.. His drawings speak more than Picasso's work i guess.. for me , that is!

hey man i was reading your conversation with Simzz and i totally agree with you. I dont want too be arogent or ignorant, picasso and all that were genisus, but when i look at a lot of their work i think, man i can do that! or how can a painting with a dot in the middle be sold for millions! but the truth is i only started art school this year, so how can i fully appreciate it all?

but still i think realist artist are so much moreeeeeeeeeeee interesting and compelling, you awww and ahhh in wonder and its just sooo beautiful too see photorealistic work

haha i guess its my prefernce as it is yours and i dont wanna be pushed too do abstract or indiviudal pieces, when my work is individual but im not gonna be snotish, i will do that sort of work at school but my heart will always lay on realism and geting better and im always 100% willing and open too learn

and may i say this drawing is amazing the water commands the attention of whoever looks at this drawing, its so realistic and abstract in shape and form (which water is) and u succeded astonishing in making it a masterpiece i dont want too give critques unless people want them because hell every drawing will be different from the last and we all know we want too get better which each one i loved your work man

Simzzzz [2007-04-04 17:58:50 +0000 UTC]

Hey
this is looking great, your really into your drawing arent you ?

anyway the water and the refraction that it creates makes for really interesting abstractions that are in contrast to the defined and well drawn face, this helps make for a more interesting composition. ( especially the water around the mouth this looks superb )

A tip when drawing any realist art is to grid up your original source photograph, if not tried this you really should it will save you a lot of time and effort in trying to get all the proportions correct. ( grid the photo, then grid your paper up to the same, however the dimensions of the squares can be bigger on your paper which will help so much with scale, then just draw each square that you see individually, your not looking at the picture as a whole and its a lot less daunting as the human eye tends to roam around an image instead of just concentrate on 1 area )
hope that helps you out a little
will be keeping a look out for your new work ok. great to see someone with your enthusiasim for realist art.

i m so glad u liked it! well im getting a lot of interest in realist art these days.. unfortunately, art was never my career.. im actually an engineer.. but will surely make art as a secondary career..
i'll be adding some hard work into my new drawings, n will surely show u! coz artists like u can detect flaws like no one can...
thanks..
btw i wanted to know, whether u have ever sold ur art?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Simzzzz In reply to rahulphilips [2007-04-05 13:10:39 +0000 UTC]

glad to be of help, and keep on with the drawing

Also yes I have sold many artworks through my gallery repesentatives in London, its always weird as you spend so much time on them and then you never really know where they go, where they are hung and prob will never see them again, but thats part of being an artist.
