This doesn't spoil anything for me, since Tumblr already did that. But this does confuse me. Nick has a criminal history, doesn't he? He's a street hustler. How does he go from small time con artist to one of the boys in blue?

Actually he doesn't. He's a scammer that has got away from the law all his life, and Judy blackmail him in the beginning of the movie to help her solve the case. His character arc is very well developed and it feels real natural.
