I've decided to start the 100 themes challenge!「百テーマのチャレンジ」を始めるんだと決めました！

I have really been wanting to do more black-and-white, toned illustrations. So I had the idea to use the 100 themes challenge for inspiration for the illustrations -- but turn it into a story!
each illustration I make for the challenge will be connected to the others and all together they will form a story.
最近白黒・トーンのイラストをしたくようになりました。
で、「百テーマのチャレンジ」をインスピレーションとして使って白黒イラストストリーを作る考えに着きました！
チャレンジに作る各イラストは前と後のイラストに繋がり、物語になります
so, this is the first theme, "Introduction."
これが第一のテーマ、「紹介」です。
sorry for the corny text...I knew the feeling I wanted to get across with the drawing but had trouble writing text to go with it...
anyway. hope you enjoy this experiment x3

I noticed on the enlarged version most of the drawing is without any antialiasing. Do you use AA for softer things (like the clouds) and no AA for hard edges? I remember reading in a book a long time ago that that's a good idea, but I disregarded it with newer printers having higher resolution.

that is a good question! I don't in fact use antialiasing due to the fact that the files I use to print are crazy high resolution; but the downside is that sometimes that makes some edges in the lower-res versions look funky. so at some point I may change the way I do things.

Oh, maybe I'm confused... I thought you drew your lines with no AA. Did you just downsize these without AA, and the original lines are smooth?

that is correct. I don't use AA. the larger file I use to make prints is smooth, and this is just choppy looking because it was downsized

Oh ok. That makes perfect sense. I read in a book on making comics from the early 2000's that digital inking should be done with an un-AA'ed edge to keep the lines sharp, but I think they were referring to older technology.
