Description The words are really not important. I just wanted to draw a comic, and this sort of.... happened. The dialogue is lame, and I really have no idea what's going on. Okay, seriously, I don't know why I'm disclaiming this. I'm such a loser. Must work on that.

Anyways. I really wanted to try some grayscale something, and do that whole, splash of colour thing. It was originally just Johnny's hair coloured in, but it looked really odd for Edgar to have white hair and gray skin. It was sort of getting to me. -laugh- I was totally inspired-- and by inspired, I mean I wanted to copy-- the scene in "I Feel Sick" where Johnny and Devi are chillaxing on the little cliff thing on (what I'm assuming is) Johhny's car. I I love that you see Johnny so neat and in colour. It's almost like I can hear him better when there's colour invoved. Is that odd? Getting off track here. I'm working on my inking skills, which are sadly lacking, and trying to get myself to work harder on pictures. Even if they always come out looking half-assed. -laugh-

UGH GOD

Edgar, Edgar, Edgar. When WILL you learn? Just because he tried to kill you doesn't make him automatically untrustworthy. Just a little unstable.

Just a little.

I have to ask - is Edgar crying in that last panel?

Edgar's head looks pretty square, but that's fine with me.

He is. I'm not sure why. -laugh- The only reason I made this was to test out making far way looking city-scapes, so there's pretty much no continuity or reasoning behind this picture.

And thanks.

I'm too lazy to do anything like backgrounds, so this has more reasoning than the stuff I do. Which is all crack to the point of embarrassment.

Noooo. They're not mine. They're Edgar Vargas and Johnny C. from "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac." It's pretty uch the greatest thing ever.

And I use Sakura pens-- .005, and .01 size, mostly-- and water colours. Which is fantastic.

-laugh- I'm glad you think it's good. I was sort of just writing things, and so the fact that there's like, NO back story to this sort of tripped me out. I usually plan out my pictures so much, but this was just, "lets write things."

Thanks! And I need to stop doing that, I know. -reluctant laugh-

I love the slouching postures in the first panel, and Edgar's deadpan expression in the second. And the choice of perspective on the city lights that you chose was spot-on, it dragged my attention right to Johnny's face.

Thank you. I'm glad those panels worked out-- those are the ones I was really working on. Past that, it gets a little funky. But the middle scene with Johnny was essentially the entire reason the picture was drawn. I really wanted to draw that little cityscape thing. I'm glad that looks okay.

Thanks. -laugh- I think Edgar's a little too gray in the first two panels, though. -laugh-

Also, I've seen people give Edgar black hair, but for some reason, I just think he's a brunette. His shirts are either earthy brown or dark purple. Don't ask me why. It's just the vibe I get from him. -laugh-

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DesdemonaKakalose In reply to Rainbow-man [2010-10-12 00:51:32 +0000 UTC]

The hair thing comes from Zarla, I think. She was the first person to draw him in color (correct me if I'm wrong) and it's sort of set the tone for all subsequent Edgars. Also, black hair just sort of looks strange in that haircut. Dunno why.

Rainbow-man In reply to DesdemonaKakalose [2010-10-13 03:22:25 +0000 UTC]

Psh, hell if I know. I got into the fan dom sort of late. Like, right when SWAN ended, I read the entire thing, and from then I was sucked in. I think I actually might've read SWAN first, because I was wondering who this Edgar fellow was that people seemed to be slashing with Nny. Spooky shit man, spooky shit.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DesdemonaKakalose In reply to Rainbow-man [2010-10-13 16:13:42 +0000 UTC]

Dude, I sort of did that too. I actually read the fanfiction before I had a copy of JTHM, and I'd only read 75% of the comic. So I assumed that Edgar was ligitimately a proper characte. From the comic and I just hadn't read his stuff yet.
Those flashbacks in SWAN? I thought those were rewritten scenes from JTHM.

XD

but then I got a copy and figured it all out. Zarla though, she really was the first person to slash Edgar with Nny. A friend dared her to, and thus was Vargas born.

(I read the history page, haha)

I really, really like everything about this except the second-to-last panel (where Edgar's rubbing his eye), but I think that's just because the hands are a bit off.

I particularly like the middle panel with Johnny in front of the view of the city lights below- it's well laid-out and I like the way you drew him (and the clouds!).

You've improved so much! Keep it up, man. I'm likin' it.

Rainbow-man In reply to BitterApples [2010-10-12 00:12:20 +0000 UTC]

That's my least favorite panel as well. It looked a lot better in pencil, but when I inked it in, it's like all of the okay was wiped away and I got that. It make me cringe a little bit, not gunna lie. -laugh- His shoulders are also really wonky. They're at lopsided angles and are differing lengths. XD

Haha, I'm seriously so glad that that panel looks okay! It's essentially the whole reason I drew the picture, just for the city light view thing. And I'm though I'm not too crazy about the way he looks in the picture, I'm glad he doesn't at least look like like a crackhead.

-laugh- Thank you! I'm glad you think so.

I know the feeling! Sometimes you missed something or were just a tiny bit off in inking, and suddenly an awesome sketch has just lost what made it exceptional during the transition to inks.

He most certainly doesn't. (Which may or may not be true to Vasquez, stylistically...) Hence, I approve.

Rainbow-man In reply to BitterApples [2010-10-12 02:44:44 +0000 UTC]

It's the worst feeling in the world, and the primary reason for never inking anything in. I think less than 20% of the pictures I draw actually get inked. But, alas, I'll never get better if I don't start, and even if that means sacrificing some pretty cool doodles, I'll do what I can to grow as a human and an artist. -I look into the sunset, the salt air whipping my hair around my face like some sort of awesome hair ninja. Did I mention we were having this conversation on a cliff near the ocean? Because we totally are. Cue the tacky music.-

Haha, well, I appreciate it. -bow-

BitterApples In reply to Rainbow-man [2010-10-12 03:21:29 +0000 UTC]

I tend to ink everything (at least the less-serious stuff that ends up on devART), because my linework is probably my greatest artistic strength. And I play to that strength, when I'm not doing SRS BZNSS ARTS. I should really bring more of that mindset into the sketching that finds its way to the interwebs, come to think of it... expand my horizons on all levels, and all that. *Oh, I know. Regrettably you failed to mention that said sea-overlooking cliff is in Wales and we're surrounded by a flock of gently grazing sheep. The tacky music fades.*

Always glad to oblige. *tips hat*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rainbow-man In reply to BitterApples [2010-10-13 04:54:36 +0000 UTC]

That's fantastic, though! Everything looks so much more professional when inked. Especially when you ink cleanly, unlike what I do. I have a very sketchy art style, which is why everything (in my opinion) looks really... lacking in inked pictures when I do them. I use a lot of lines in order to create a picture, and the whole single line thing really doesn't work very well with me. -sigh-
*The music weaves in and out of the breeze, giving an ambiance of complete peace and serenity as the sheepy flocks go their merry way a-grazin'. Slowly, the sun begins to set, and as we gaze into the darkening sky, I hum a jaunty tune and say quietly, "a perfect end, to a perfect sheepy day."*

I thank you, my dear. -even lower bow-

Eh, sometimes. Sometimes (as we discussed) something just gets lost in translation. I mean, I'm very into clean lines when inking, but my initial sketches are sometimes pretty messy.
*I raise an eyebrow and snark something about how it could easily be made better by not being suurounded by the pungent odour of damp wool.*

*Indeed. Get some sleepy time tea, and we have ourselves a party, dear.*

I was given one of the books on Christmas three yeas ago, read it, hated the art, waited about two years until my art teacher talked to me about it, and then got hooked after the second one. I just... the first book is horrible drawn. I'm so happy they changed artists after that first volume thing. Ugh. ((I only read them in the trade paperback editions, though, with all the comics combined. It was annoying trying to tell my teacher where I was in the story, because he only read them in the little fifteen page comic things. Lame.))

Unfortunately, I've never read anything made into a book. I want to read "Bad Omens," and "Neverwhere." Are there any Gaiman books you'll recommend? On a related note, my mom didn't even know he was a writer. She was surprised when she found out he had books that weren't comics. Amusing. -laugh-

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BitterApples In reply to Rainbow-man [2010-10-21 17:46:15 +0000 UTC]

*a very sedate party is had*

They didn't just change artists after the first volume- there were a number of artists over the course of the series. I read most of them in Ultimate Sandman form (fancy binding, fancy paper, re-coloured by original artists who hadn't originally gotten the look they were going for due to deadlines) because my library had 3/4 of the series that way. (I know someone who read the comics as they came out and got some of them signed by Neil Gaiman himself. AWESOME.) As far as his comics go, though, the epic and well-constructed Sandman series isn't even my favourite. Of what Gaiman has written, that honour would have to go to a little self-contained graphic novel called Mr. Punch. (Its proper title is really much longer, but it's often shortened to that.) Dave McKean's artwork is a perfect match for the narrative, and it equisitely captures the nature of childhood memories.

I knew him first as a prose writer and only later discovered his comics. I spent my last euros on a copy of the Author's Preferred Text edition of Neverwhere (which combines the best bits of the British and American versions, which are somewhat different) in the Dublin airport and have been in literary love ever since. I think you mean Good Omens, but Gaiman + Pratchett = awesomely sacreligious good times. I'd heartily recommend his short stories, too, though- he realy excels at that form. Smoke and Mirrors and Fragile Things are both quite good, with one of my two favourites in each: "The Goldfish Pool and Other Stories" and "Bitter Grounds." They're both haunting little pieces that stick with you long after you've read them.
