RainbowBruises — A Comic About Gender

Description I wrote this comic to represent a happy side of gender differences.
It doesn't matter what genitals you have,
it doesn't matter what gender you identify with (if any at all),
what matters is just you as a person!
Gender should not be able to solely define one person.

Your gender doesn't have to "define" you but to say gender is interchangeable regardless of dna is complete and utter nonsense. Barring some genetic abnormality, a man is no more a woman than a bear is a dolphin. You can advocate social equality without being ridiculously stupid.

I think you may have "gender" and "sex" confused.

You see, sex is the stuff between your knees.
It takes a lot of time and effort to change that, but it can be changed!

However, gender is how you see and define yourself.
Gender is a form of expression and is, by all means, interchangeable!

Someone can wake up in the morning and know in their head that they are a man.
They don't have to look down at their genitalia to know that! Why?
Because that is who they are in their minds!

You know you are (or perhaps are not) a certain gender in your brain,
not in your junk. Your junk doesn't identify you!
If it did, we would all have to be exposing ourselves to everyone
in order for us to be identified.

Ok, so you're saying definitions like male and female refer to sex and man and woman refer to gender? You're saying somebody can be a male woman and a female man?

"We would all have to be exposing ourselves to everyone in order for us to be identified"

Just plain goofyness. Identifying somebody as male and female is one of the first distinctions humans make regarding a person they first meet. Why is it you can forgot a persons name, hair color, clothes, but something you never forget about them is their sex? You don't have to look down their pants to know that, you know it subconsciously, make-up and clothes don't hide that unless in statistically insignificant rare cases. By the way, sex isn't just "the stuff between your knees", it's hard coded in your DNA, your bones, your brain, skin, hair, nearly every square inch of your body is affected by your sex, no "time and effort" can change that. You can surgically mutilate your genitalia in an effort to change that, but you don't go from one sex to another, you become something in between, and if you really care about somebody's self esteem and self image that should be the last thing you should recommend to somebody.

I agree that sex is usually one of the first things people notice about something, but as far as gender goes I'd say it's what you personally see yourself as...there are many females who feel their gender is male and vice versa...to me at least, it's much more private whether you see yourself as having a male or female gender.

VentAnger In reply to Kitten-Pie [2012-04-08 13:20:31 +0000 UTC]

Of course. I can't argue against how somebody feels. I'm arguing what the reality of the situation is. You can feel that you're a fish, doesn't mean you can breathe under water.

Flutterella In reply to VentAnger [2012-04-10 12:38:46 +0000 UTC]

Except fish aren't sapient, so it's a bit hard to "feel" like you are a fish. (And there has actually been research done into "neurological" sex and causes for transsexualism. Look it up.)

And you're very likely committing the toupee fallacy here. You've probably encountered trans* people before without being aware of it. And I'm very amused that people always bring up genitals, when HRT (hormone replacement therapy) plays a much greater role. And what people notice about other people isn't "sex", it's phenotype. You notice outward presentation and body shape and interpret that. You can "determine" sex in various way and none of them have a clear answer. Chromosones? What about Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome? Are you going to call these women men because they have XY chromosomes? What about Klinefelter? And all other various intersex conditions?

[link] (This is an interesting read on the subject.)

Not to mention that the medical sector disagrees with your point of view and gender dysphoria is an actually existing condition.

Perhaps you missed what I said before, but I fully understand tragic cases when there are actual genetic abnormalities regarding somebody's gender. That's not what I'm arguing. What I'm arguing is that if there's a mental emotional displacement between their sex and what they feel their sex is, surgery and/or hormones isn't the solution, it can't be, since neither of those things has any effect on your sex. If there was an actual technological technique that could change somebody's sex on the genetic level, I'd support that for people suffering that disorder, but there isn't. What we have so far is simply genital mutilation. Since that's the case, my recommendation is psychological therapy to help people understand and accept their sex, as opposed to surgically destroying their body in some misguided belief it's the solution. Again, it doesn't change your sex, it puts you in a limbo in between, and if you really care about the emotional stability and happiness of people with this disorder, that's the very last thing you should recommend.

Has been tried, a lot. There's a reason transitioning is the preferred "treatment" for trans* people; because it's the only freakin' thing that works. And I'm thoroughly amused about how you apparently know that transitioning isn't in the benefits of people doing so (note that transitioning is a choice by the trans person, not something dumped on you.) when there's a basically non-existent regret rate over transitioning and trans people report being less depressive and more stable and whatever faux concerns you are adding. Gender dysphoria is debilitating; and the reason why people transition.

Flutterella In reply to hushed-lullabies [2012-04-10 16:09:07 +0000 UTC]

I'm born with eyes; does that mean eyes are sex? Do you mean genitals? What about various sorts of intersex people who often get their sex 'decided' by the doctor. (Luckily that is decreasing. But look up the case of David Reimer for example.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hushed-lullabies In reply to Flutterella [2012-04-10 16:48:25 +0000 UTC]

I meant genitals. And what about them? it's not like they could control what happened to them. Personally I think maybe if they were raised more neutral until they reached a certain age and were able to choose how they wanted to live when they were old enough to decide, that would be best.
