Description
    Oil in luon, 16” x 16” each.

TITLE HA WHO NEEDS ONE OF THOSE.

For my final project, we were given a 36” x 42” piece of luon and told we had to use all of it. That was it.

There were a couple of ideas bumping around my head. Ultimately I decided that I wanted to explore hand lettering and portraiture with the wood grain again. Eventually I came upon the idea of pairing a portrait of someone I know with a word/feeling I associate with them.

This painting just sort of ended up being about three ladies in my life that are important to me and my associations/memories/feelings about them. I’ve grow a lot this past school year. I’m starting to understand that relying on other people isn’t always a weakness, and these are three people that are very important to me. Starting from the top, it is my aunt Lauren, my best friend Ashley, and my little sister Katie.

Each of the accompanying words and their definitions were (attemptedly) done in their hand writing. I purposefully chose words that were not english, because I honestly think the american english dictionary as it currently stands is seriously lacking. It’s just a coincidence that they all ended up to be asian words! They are, starting from the top:

Wabi-Sabi: (Japanese) Finding beauty in the natural integrity, simplicity, modesty, and imperfection of objects. Detail: [link]

Lǎo tóng: (Chinese) Eternal friendship between “heart sisters”–two women who were closer than husband and wife. Detail: [link]

Jung: (Korean) A special feeling that is stronger than mere ‘love’ and can only often be proved by having survived a huge argument with someone. Detail: [link]
