I'll still be highly impressed, I promise! Mainly because you're one of the few who make the effort.
It takes patience to do anything well. To produce top quality work.

I decided a while back to not upload any work I wouldn't fave. I wanted to hold my gallery to a higher standard. The best I could do, now. Later, who knows.

lol you gotta see my earlier works. funny part was i always turn the shadows off because it renders faster without it. little did i know how important it is

Renders not just faster without shadows, lightspeed faster. I can almost render and manipulate a good shadow in about the same amount of time. I know I can do a basic burn shadow faster. But a triple copy, warp, blur, erase, does take a bit longer than a shadow render. Then again , you have precise control. A quick render of your basic character from the lighting angle, desaturated makes a decent sharp shadow, in maybe 5 minutes total. Hit it hard with a blur brush at the distance, and you're done. It takes longer if you have to fold it over something.

back before i started using vue, i have never done the cut and paste thing, i just didn't like it much and my knowledge in photoshop is not as good as most. sure, i can paint clothing and hair and do brushes and stuff but that's about the extent of it.

When you copy and paste something, it makes a new layer. Unless you tell it to do otherwise, anything you do, only affects that layer. Even if it's the only layer. So if you copy your character from an otherwise transparent render, you can act on it in any way you choose. Desaturate it, darken it to black, and lay it where the shadow would go. It might need some rotation, warp, etc. to make it look right, but that's a basic sharp shadow. Then you play with your blur. With a few copies set to varying blurriness, laid over each other, you get that true shadow effect. Like I say, the hard part is when it bends over something.

Welcome Home and Rodeo On Ice were my shadow/reflection study results. I wanted multiple shadows overlapping in Rodeo. I wanted shadows in different directions from a single light with Welcome Home. In Welcome home, I got some of the shadows too sharp, but I was bending them over clouds, so sue me.

bah that's a lot of work lmao. i may be a postwork junkie but that's one of the reasons why i can never do phot manip. am just not that patient with it

Tell you what... you render me something sans shadow. I'll do what I described, and time it. I really don't think it takes that long. The main difference tween 3D and nipping, is the camera. With nips, the scene is built around the camera angle, and in 3D the camera is positioned , and repositioned. There's no render time in photomanipulation. I've had a scene with over 600 layers. I never said it was good, just had the layers, sure enough.

yow, 600 layers!!! bloody hell that's a lot!!! it bugs me when my layers go for more than 15, lol. i always merge things down such as the hair layer just so there isn't too many. i get so confused even if i rename the layers.

markopolio In reply to RainfeatherPearl [2006-12-02 16:01:31 +0000 UTC]

I merged it about every 50-60 layers and kept on running with it.
Here it is...[link] It was a plain field with no trees or flowers. Looks pitiful compared to my vision for it.
I don't bother naming them. If the thumb is too small to see some tiny little bit, I'll merge it with something bigger, or something on the same depth plane. It usually turns out that I have something like 10 layers, maybe fifteen.

wow that actually is worth the layers hon - it is a beautiful scene - i could just run around in it - nicely done indeed!

When I was a small boy, almost a teen, I came out of a swampy adventure run. I stepped through the brush into a field of daffodils. The spring breeze was blowing, and all the daffodils were dancing. The smell was intoxicating. I remember it as though it was yesterday, though it's been over 30 years. That image didn't come close, nice, pretty, but pale in comparison to what was actually there. Someday, I'll try to show it again.

I tried to get the feel of it. But something was off, lacking, something... Too many daffodils, or too big a field, or something. It didn't give me that feeling.

a missing element - i alway feel that way whenever i finish a render. one time i finished one i called "dragon keep", one of my daughters said it needed an element and boy was she right. after we added the fire it looked awesome!

markopolio In reply to RainfeatherPearl [2006-12-05 23:17:10 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Fire might make a difference in a dragon scene!
With my Welcome Home, a heaven representation, it was missing the flying tortoises. That REALLY made heaven work!

I'm working on one now. I'll post it soon enough, but right now it's too emotional to let go of. Those little details. I've been working on the skills to produce this one piece for almost a year. I spent over a hundred bucks for the content for it. I'm nuts. One piece. I had to learn Photoediting, 3D, and a few other things just to begin to make it. It needs a special frame. I'm lost at the moment. So it doesn't go up.

well keep at it hon...and post it when you're ready. i have had a couple of pieces made that i can't even look at without feeling the pain of when i made it. i still can't look at it till now and prefer not to lol.

Luckily, this brings on this amazingly strong sense of love and joy! My grandpa let me steer the car. Yesterday, it must have been. I remember his smell, the feel of his belly on my back. And I've almost completely captured that moment in time. I've studied for almost a year to be able to come this close to capturing that one moment.
