Description next in my series of resketches from my 2011 Justice League piece is this lovely little addition.

Changes I made from the 2011 design include an alteration to the shoulder pads, and a stronger emphasis on the organic nature of his crustacean shell chestplate. I also removed the symbols from the front of his sarong.

I wanted Arthur to look fierce and formidable, but not by changing too much about him. Choice one was to not only focus on the version that had already lost his hand, but the one that had moved beyond the hook and was already using the one made of water. I love the idea of the power inherent in that. Also... the loss of his hand was always one of the more badass stories.

So the choice to house that magic in an intricately crafted, Magical Atlantean gauntlet fit for a king... well that was just fun.

Choosing to bolster his shoulder and chest armor was mainly a consideration of the mechanics involved in swimming or living on the ocean floor. Most of the time he would either be moving forward or upward, so the areas that would need the most protection would naturally be the ones that were thrust against that all the time.

I did give him a dive knife because well... I figure he grew up on the waterfront, he is used to keeping one nearby and it seemed logical.

His belt is shells. His sarong is... well, I really don't know why I gave him a sarong. It felt Atlantean and Regal. I thought it would move nicely in the water. So I went with it.

I exposed his gills through slits in the collar of his armor and I included fins on the calves of his pants...

I did NOT give him boots and I left his booties (for lack of a better word) split for the movement of his large toe independently from the others... There are reasons for this believe it or not.  He lives underwater... but for most of his life he lived near a beach... Shoes and sand don't mix well unless you can keep them sealed off... and if your'e swimming all of the time, then quite frankly, you aren't walking a lot. Of course if you spend that much time walking around barefoot (like myself) then you learn very quickly just how useful it can be to actually use your toes. Arthur Curry could probably crack open an oyster using his dive knife and one foot.

Last but not least... Why is he nearly albino? Well, because he's only half human. The other half of his blood,  the Atlantean side... is from a people that have been underwater for millennia. There is no sun that deep. Their lights are artificial. Their pigmentation is very light. Even though their features may not be what is typically considered caucasion... these folks are definitely a bit on the pale side... and AC is a straight up half and half... even if his old man tanned like a sailor on leave, I just didn't think it made much sense for him. Even his hair is nearly white and bay fine... Basically, evolution happens quick when you move underwater for multiple generations.

I never could understand how the heck this dude could swim with set heavy boots, myself.

Or just Barefoot, cuz that's prolly the way of the Atlantian culture, or something.

Hence the reason he shouldn't wear shoes.
