Description
my superman design.the face was actually created using a combination of the facial markers from several different people.
tom welling
christopher reeves
john hamm
dean cain
brandon routh
So to me, this is the ultimate face of superman.
Of course The costume design is a combination of my two previous efforts, worked into a new pose.
It's fan art of course. I have no association with DC and you are welcome to share it around if you like, so long as I am credited for the image particularly.
*new note* I just Discovered an actor I didnt include who really looks the part of this composite. Its uncanny.

So the design thoughts for this can pretty well be summarized in 3 parts.
Pants, boots and flight suit.
While I did want the look to remain iconic and a bit Alien, I also wanted to heavily emphasize Clarks earthbound upbringing. I looked at a lot of jumpsuits used for test pilots and space flight, and that was where the seams and the pants came into play as well as the original boots that I used.
However the point was made early on that while the lace up style combat boots did fit for Clark, they did not fit so well for Kal-el. So I modified them towards a simpler aesthetic in which I added attachment cuffs for the pants to tuck into them.
I don't feel like he needs a skin tight unitard or exterior briefs to maintain the classic look. Like all of my designs I wanted to focus on who he is at his core and what type of functionality his personal choices would bring to the "uniform"... but I also wanted to focus on where this particular "uniform" came from and why it would look this way.
I imagine krypton to be futuristic, but not as entirely removed form earth as some designs. Practicality would extend over to purpose. This was not a military family, but a science one, so I shifted over to NASA for inspiration. The way that I imagine a Kryptonian flight suit is that in lieu of a badge or patch, they would wear an undershirt and belt containing the family crest. This would be a proud way of displaying the family name for a group of individuals who are basically international heroes (imagine that Krypton treats its scientists the way that America treated astronauts in the 60's)
On top of that would be something we find quite familiar with a loose fitting jumpsuit. The top piece would have contained a jacket (though high tech) complete with harness, pockets, vest etc... This suit would have been Jor el's backup within the pod that brought Kal to earth and was folded beneath the helmet in the seat... I see baby Kal-el strapped into an experimental aircraft, literally wrapped in the red fabric of a parachute, nested inside of a flight helmet in the cockpit while the flightsuit itself helps boost the height just enough for the straps to be effective... but Clark saw no reason to wear the jacket and instead opted for the form fitting breathable undershirt that displays his family symbol. The cape is actually the leftovers from the parachute itself.
The bright blue color isn't even unheard of here. If you look at a nasa flightsuit you'll see bright blue and white patches.

Underneath which they actually do wear form fitting thermal underclothing

So I didn't venture too far from that.
Even though it's not visible, I do have this image of the helmet and the jacket in mind. They are a bit more "Alien" in design, but still essentially all function. The "seams" are actually streamlined piping that would have helped to regulate body temperature in the extreme conditions of cold space or the heat of re-entry. This piping pulls double duty as it also relays readings to sensors in the vest which monitor vitals. The red stripes on the pants attach to the water connectors, pressure regulators and oxygen inlets worn on the vests exterior. The belt buckle contains a data drive that holds all the family information in case anything happens. In essence when all worn together, this becomes a fully functional spacesuit.
The collar was a choice made to the idea of actually fastening over the neck as excess protection beneath the suit so that when the helmet and gloves were worn this would cover all exposed skin. The jacket contains pressure locks at the arm and neck openings similar to the boots. (the metal ring at the top)...
There is much more than meets the eye... Clark just leaves most of it back at the fortress... But we all know that Supes has a suit for travel in deep space too and so all he has to do here is go grab his jacket and helmet and he's ready to fly into the void.
So basically in my mind that is how a farmboy from Kansas gets away with wearing a bunch of bright colors and symbols of an alien world without it looking or feeling like a forced juxtasposition against character type. This is a flight suit... an alien one to be sure, most often worn incompletely, but a flightsuit none the less... and I think that Clark would be proud to wear it as his uniform.

The face does look very well done & the suit was lightly taken from "Superman Returns" which I really liked. Except that the Red coloring in the movie was way too maroon for me. Glad to see it back to it's brightness.
PS. Goku shoulda won Death Battle! hashtag: ButtHurt

the pose is definitely from superman returns, as well as the shield placement... but I like to think that the design is far and away.

Love...this...redesign. It's incredible. After two years of NOT seeing it, seeing it again just makes it more awesome!
Incidentally, since the actor you wanted was in the newest Superman film, what did you think of it?

I actually haven't had a chance to see it yet. My town is sort of lacking in movie theaters.

I personally liked it. A lot. However, I could see why others don't like it, even if I feel like it's completely illogical. My favorite character in the film was, Surprise, surpise, Superman. I liked his costume and the explanation for it being there and I liked all of the supporting characters, especially when ******* and ****** pulled ****** on ******* and...sorry, I'll stop now.
But bottom line, I really liked the film, but you may not. I think you will, simply because you're awesome and we share similar tastes in Superman costumes and a lot of the viewers who aren't critics liked it.
I really liked it. I liked everything about it, save one scene which felt KIND of out of place, but the movie was great. Hope that helps.

This may actually be my favorite redesign of Superman's costume ever. It's got a slick collar, but one that doesn't seem too high-and-mighty. The two-tone costume actually works pretty well. It combines Jim Lee's New 52 suit's alien aesthetic perfectly with Morrison's T-shirt look's sense of down-to-Earthiness. He seems like an everyman and an alien at the same time. It's perfect, and I wish DC would use this suit. Maybe remove some of the piping, and I'm not sure the top half needs quite so much detail, but besides that, I want them to use this exact suit. The "S" is interchangeable, so the Returns "S" is a bit dated, but it'd be no problem to put the MoS "S" into this outfit. It's truly, truly a fantastic design, and one I think DC should be notified of.
But having said that, please, please for the love of god redraw Cavill's face. His nose and lips don't line up, the lips are too thick, and the lines are too thick and hard themselves. It's a good idea and there's a good face under it, but the execution requires a redraw badly. Please. D:

I may do that. the face and costume were actually done before the 52 reboot announcement or the Cavill announcement. The face was actually a composite of everyone who played supes onscreen before It just came out a bit Cavill esque.

Okay, I faved the design. It's awesome.
If there was one thing I'd change, it's the boots. They make him look...like a Lumberjack. I dunno. Maybe I'd like them more if they were streamlined a bit.

I thought about biker style boots, even riding boots... but for some reason clark just strikes me as needing either work or combat boots... I might rework it at some point with a similar style but without the laces.

AHA!
I thought the laces were the problem (with me. I dunno about you). So I looked up some boot designs, and I came up with these.

What do you think? Make them longer, obviously, but I think they look good.
But, ultimately, it's your call. I just like the design (it makes the trunk-less design work).

Oddly enough, this redesign reminds me somewhat of the recent rework of Captain America, the way it looks more like clothing and something you might expect fight the forces of evil in, rather than, say, bodypaint or a second skin.
Although, weirdly and conversely, I don't prefer the Dark Knight Batman costume to, say, the Animated Series version.

I think with the batman costume, there is a delicate balance to be struck... On one hand you need the armor, on the other hand you don't need people to see it on a level that they can place its weak spots.
I think the armor works best as an underlying design component beneath a simpler cover that blends in better with the shadows. He isn't superhuman, but it's best if his enemies don't know that for sure. I like to keep him dark, no reflective surfaces unless its his eyes or a batarang. It works best when his tech is unseen. I mean if everyone sees you fire a grapple into the air, then they know you can't fly. But if all they see is a shadow one place then suddenly another... they dont know anything, but they'll be terrified.
I do suppose that since I have yet to do a batman rework on here, it will have to follow up the brainiac one. I guess Ill just do the big three, and their most compatible villains. should be fun

Ive never really been a fan of the bottom half He usually has... its always struck me like he's half superguy guy from kansas up top and half super gay from san fran down below. I mean he was raised a farm boy, tights and a cape are pushin it, but acceptable... when you start talking pirate boots, leotard pants and an exterior speedo.... something there isn't quite copacetic.
And I emphasize on the boots especially. farm boy, pirate boots, or even the newer ones that look like gogo boots... nah, not jonathan kents boy. He goes to work he puts on some work boots.

rainingcrow In reply to MattSimas [2011-01-10 05:01:53 +0000 UTC]
ok, but the design was made in the days when boxers and wrestlers wore small shorts or underwear essentially over their tights to avoid their packages showing. ( "boxer shorts" )Modesty and all that being what it was.
If you look back at the artwork artistically you'll notice that the attire actually became tighter as the years progressed. The shorts turned into skibbies then to something that now resembles a speedo. The boots were originally made to resemble mens riding boots...
In a cultural irony, our superheros wearing tights became the norm, but in those sports where the shorts on the outside was once a practice...(thus inspiring this strange fashion lenience) now we have progressed to basically nothing but the shorts...except in "pro" wrestling where the idea is now to try to look like either a super hero or villain.
point is that times change, and a design that made sense back then due to a cultural context, no longer makes sense when that cultural context has all but vanished. Its not like the undies on the outside was a kryptonian thing. It was a fit in with earth thing...
I mean NO ONE has ever looked good with undies on the outside, and males in tights have particular... lets say moose knuckle problems unless they're wearing a cup or something. CK grew up bailing hay and driving fence posts... comfort and ease of movement is important to the job, and clothing always affects the confidence when you leave the house. Beyond the tights and the undies, the choice to replace the riding boots was that modern day work boots work just as well without looking like he shopped at an antique boutique.
My take was to keep the super appearance, but look at it from the Clark Kent perspective... alien raised as a farmboy... a modern farmboy, who has only ever shown an interest in girls.
Although even if this was appollo or midnight we were talkin here... I still wouldn't go with undies on the outside.
