Description
On monday I made the first piece of damascus steel with the kind help of a class mate with vast knowledge about the subject. The results were good and these are the first objects I made out of the piece. I have enough material for about six more pendants and I hope to get some more fresh ideas for them.Related content

Ordinary low-carbon steel and some old saw-blade. If I make more some time then I might use high-carbon sheet steel instead.

Thanks for replying.
When I got time, I forge knives. I use XC80. But unable to craft damascus. Too difficult for me.
Anyway, great job! I saw your gallery: awsome!

Thank you!
I don't forge too much anything that needs hardening (some punching tools lately) so I haven't tried a variety of different high-carbon steels.

XC80, hard to forge, hardening is quite easy to do. Best is vegetal oil. But I use to do a selective hardening only on the "cut side" (don't know the name in english, sorry.^^).
Hardening phase is really a gorgeous phase.

Yes, no thorough hardening on knives or else they loose all flexibility and snap in two with enough impact.
Hardening is usually easy but I don't like the tempering after that. You've got to be careful not to get it too soft.

I don't mean to sound like one of those people who doesn't take commissions seriously, but god damn, if I had enough money after my college fees, I would buy one.
I am in love with the one on the far right.
But I'm sure the postage would kill me...
Excellent work, as always. A little simplistic, but... most awesome.

Thank you again.
I also like the one on the right. I wasn't event too sure if I wanted to sell it at all. But these are, as you say, simplistic, and I'm hoping to get more excitingly formed pendants next week. There are some nice patterns in the damascus pieces still left.

Simplicity can outshine intricacy if done well, as here.
I loved these, so of course I'm eager to see whatever else you come up with!

Looks good, some more foldings wouldn't have hurt to get an even better look, though. But defenetely a well done work.

Thanks! Yeah, maybe some folding in different ways and different carbon steel for greater contrast (or a lot longer time in acid). But that might be one of the things I needed to learn from the process.

That's the right spirit. Well... I'v learned during my apprenticeship, that a higher layer number often tends to look more interesting on small items, while a lower number makes larger pieces the eye-catcher.

You've got the truth there.
Damascus is more of a curiosity to me so if I make more in the future it could be mostly testing and then thinking of where I could use it. Still, I'd take it seriously in trying to make as nice pattern as possible.

i wish i could see one in real life.
the image makes it look too molten almost.
like it still needs to cool down. so i hard to imagine the gleem of the silver

They look almost the same in reality. The steel has a large crystal structure so it's really glittery.

Straight from me. I'm afraid these aren't too cheap, 50 dollars (40 euros) each. If you are actually interested, send me a note.
