“Raj! Telephone for you-oooo!”

Chevoda pranced into the doorway. Her smile slipped a bit when she saw that her good friend and boss was still in bed. The covers were tussled, and one might have imagined a more risque scenario had they not spent the past few months with the woman. Rajial’s flaming red hair peeked from beneath the many pillows strewn against the headboard. She didn’t move.

“This is not going to do, m’dear,” Chev growled. She yanked the curtains aside and secured them. The sunlight beaming through the extravagant window didn’t seem to disturb the resident. When the covers were stolen abruptly, a stir.

“What time is it?” Raj groaned.

Ahh. The question I’ve received every single morning for weeks, Chevy thought.

“It’s time to get up, and there’s still the phone for you.”

There was no humor in her voice, such a rarity. Raj squinted into the morning light and took the phone.

“Hello?” She mumbled.

“Raj? Hey, it’s Jake! How are you doing?”

Blink. Blink. Blink-blink.

“I’m fine. To what do I owe this honor?”

“Did you just wake up?”

“No.”

Chevy scoffed at the foot of the bed. Loud phone talkers. Ya gotta hate ‘em.

“Well, errr, listen. I have a friend who breeds the horses those Arabs own---” He said it “ay-rab,” like Captain Ahab in Moby Dick.

“... Arabians?”

“Nah, uhhhh, madukis or something?”

“Marwaris?” She sat up.

“Yeah-yeah! But anyways, there’s a filly that was born a couple weeks ago, and they’re putting her down unless they find a home for her.”

“What?! Is that even legal?” Her voice cracked from disuse.

“It is in this case. When she was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck for a while, and she has some neurological issues. No one’s going to buy a horse like that.”

“Except for me, right? Because I’m such a do-gooder.”

Silence on the other end of the line.

“She has really nice bloodlines, and I just figured I’d offer. The owners are giving her away and even delivering her free of charge! Forget it. I’m sorry I even asked. You and Chev have your hands full, especially now that Colt---”

He paused at her sharp intake of breath.

“I’ll take her, but I guess you already knew that. Who else is going to deal with a neurotic horse.”

Chevoda nearly fell off the bed. No, NO! She mouthed, waving her arms.

“Great, I really appreciate it. She’s a cutie---black and white on one side and nothing but black on the other!”

“Give me some fair notice before she arrives, and I expect her to be weaned properly. And, Jake? Next time, ask me straight out. Don’t feed me any of that sympathy crap.”

“Understood. I’ll bring her myself. Thank you.”

“Don’t mention it.”

Raj met Chevy’s eyes. In the stare that was exchanged, Chevy didn’t object, and Raj didn’t apologize. She was the boss, and maybe a damaged project was just what she needed.

Yes, I am alive! Gosh, I'm so sorry for not posting anything in so long... There have been some family issues and school stressors that have made it difficult to draw. Sometimes, you just need a break.

This foal has been an idea of mine since I did a mini-report on the Marwari breed. Look them up! They are really famous as warhorses and even said to protect their riders from enemies and such. I'll post her information and register her when the adult pic is finished. For now, you can know that she is going to be an absurd sweety with some particular neurological hiccups that will certainly make trouble for her owners.
