The young mare was aware of the cougar following her, always stalking her from her above, deadly silent as he waited, patiently, for the mare to make one single mistake. She knew this, but preferred to play dumb for the time being, trotting away from the herd and pretending to graze carelessly, all by herself... Perhaps her trap was a bit too obvious, but the mare was confident that not predator, no matter how skilled or patient, could resist the temptation of an easy meal in a place as unforgiving as the desert. It was a risk worth taking. Or at least, that's what the cougar must have thought as he jumped from a nearby dead tree, extending his sharp claws to, hopefully, latch onto the horse's neck or back.

Sadly for him, this mare was no ordinary prey.

Without flinching, she timed her reaction almost perfectly and managed to dodge the cougar's grasp, biting into his neck before the feline would hit the ground. She didn't come out unscathed, though, as the cougar swung his unsheathed claws in a desperate attempt to break free from the mare's bite, scratching her snout and face. However, the mare did not let go of him, sinking her teeth even deeper until drawing blood, enthralled by the feline's agonizing screams and enraged that this foolish cat ever thought of her as prey.
