Description
Haven't done art for me in ages. Saw a picture on [link] that was a screen capture from the new show and this kind of happened.Played around with color, purposely keeping it simple, using only one brush.
Done in Sai over a couple days. Didn't keep track.

Splinter is about to defend his charges; Raphael believes he is big enough to help. Good art.

Splinter looks like he's going to do some serious but-kicking karate on someone.

"they can't even use the bathroom!" ... at least Leo is apprehensive about those public bathrooms! I know that's not what you meant, but pfffh... But yeah, Raph and Leo's eye colors are bad design choices! How ever Splinter makes up for it a lil' bit by being the most awesome rat ever!

Are you kidding? *I'm* apprehensive about public restrooms. They can be truly nasty here in the states. It's not like in Europe where they are well maintained. Or at least they were when I was there in the 80s.
I was dubious when I first saw Splinter's designs, but his is the only one I have come to like. An adult sized, in the prime of life guy is a huge improvement over the tiny, frail rat. Always felt the human changed to a rat was a better idea, than the rat somehow knowing Ninjitsu. Sorry, what? A normal rat. I'm a huge fan of the original comic, but this show seems to have combined most the best of everything.

Ha, hah, yeah the feral-rat-that-somehow-learned-ninjitsu-from watching-his-master thing always irked me too! I like the Hamato-to-Splinter transformation a lot better, one of the few things I really liked about the 80's show! And Splinter now looks like their dad and not their granddad!
And I don't think our public bathrooms were that great before... but at least they were cheap! Now they can be quite luxurious, but you may have to pay 2 bucks to take a pee! .___.

I never watched the 80s show. It's just so bad, on so many levels.. bleh, but yeah, that one thing was something I was glad made a reappearance. I like the new lair too. Makes me assume they aren't going to lose it to the mousers, as that's a staple from the comics. They lived in this tiny area, like small apartment sized, and then found something larger after the mousers dropped that whole area into rubble. Was kind of funny too. Imagine Raph and Mikey stuck all day in a tiny room together.
Well, imagine a room that never gets cleaned. Lots of movies and shows make fun of the turn on the lights, and the black room turns dingy white as the roaches flee.. but that isn't too far from the truth depending on where you are. Splinter had good reason to warn his boys.

Oh god... I'm so glad we don't have roaches here, then I wouldn't be able to use public bathrooms either!! ><
And the 80's show is SUPER-cheesy! Pretty far from the 2k3 show, which is my favorite... The live action movies were pretty corny too, tho particularly the first one had a certain charm that still sticks.

Yeah, things are very different in Europe, which is why I mentioned it. Sure Leo is over reacting in true Leo fashion, but Splinter's warning was a good one.
I kind of saw the first movie in the theaters, opening weekend, so yeah.
Could never watch the 80s show. I could barely watch 2K3. Not a tv person sadly. Which is why I've been amazed at the 2012 show. It's consistent, and smart. That's very rare for a show. Sure it has things I roll my eyes over, but I haven't fast forwarded through whole segments as I've done with nearly everything else. Most shows are so blatantly predictable for me they have no enjoyment value at all.

This is so awesome! They look a bit feral, like they've just mutated. Almost looks like it was made in Illustrator (vector), and I love the slightly Art Deco'ish style to many of your pics recently!

Thanks! It was my intent to try for the just mutated thing, but decided against the glowing green ooze. It cluttered things. Also tried to make Raph's eyes green, but it looked really bad. Changing them gold was the only way they could show well. And of course I had to add tails. Turtles should have tails!

YES, TAILS ALL THE WAY! And yeah, Raph looks best with golden eyes, I'm still not used to those radioactive-green ones he has in the new show... ><

There are several design issues I scratch my head over. Leo's blue eyes on a blue mask, the bright green eyes for Raph, no tails, they can't even use the bathroom! ...For all I totally know why they cover that gap in animation it's still annoying. Other aspects I know are done to save money, making me far more forgiving of.
I love the show for the story, characterization, and expressions, but the animation style they picked isn't my favorite.
Splinter though.. I love his new look. Best Splinter yet.

Wow. I love how you made Splinter look all "come near them and die" and the innocence in all of their eyes, especially Mikey's. Epic.

I love the ferocious protective parent look in Master Splinters eyes and his pose. You've also caught the turtle tots personalities too. This pic benefited greatly from that purposeful simplicity! Great job.
