Description
Okay so hopefully this will help clear up any questions some may have as to how to apply the stencils. Note this is just how I go about it. Some like other methods better such as tracing with a sharpie or using a glue technique. All in all it's whatever works best for youAnyhow, enjoy!

Thanks for posting this! I'm no good at carving pumpkins, and have never even just tried carving the skin off of one, so this is quite a help. I'm planning to do your Kniuckles stencil and a Mare in the Moon from . But again, thanks.
Favorite achieved!

I decided to use your design for the Shadow pumpkin but am having a little trouble with the peeling part. Any suggestions other than what you mentioned?

Hmm I actually haven't started my Werehog yet so I'm a bit rusty but I do recall somethings. One was to rub baby powder on the pumpkin after you've poked all the holes in. The powder sinks in the holes and turns them white so you can see them easier. Also I seem to recall starting with the peeling sections first. I'd use and X-acto knife and cut just the tough skin of the pumpkin away. The knife was also good because it was a short blade and didn't go all the way through the pumpkin. I'd then use a screwdriver like tool and chisel away at the flesh under the skin so it was thinned enough for light to shine through a bit. The thickness of pumpkins vary so you just have to use your best judgment on how deep to chisel.

Thanks for the help. I'm really on a roll here now since you mentioned the X-acto knife. Dunno why I didn't think of it before.

That's a very useful tutorial! Although, I won't be here Halloween night, I'm going camping with my friends.
I wish I can make up a stencial! Because my lil'sis is dying to have NiGHTS stuff, me too. That's just because I have a Sonic Team collection. So I was going to figure out how to make a NiGHTS pumpkin stencil or make NiGHTS outta pastry stuff since I'm a good baker. But at the moment, I'm going to make a Reala, NiGHTS, and Jackle costume! It's a perfect touch to my collection!
Oh yeah, I loved your Shadow figure on top of that pumpkin! He seems ready for Halloween! I was going to make my Shadow figure a NiGHTS costume just for fun, or I'll give him a cloak.... I don't know yet. What kind of figure is your Shadow? Mine is a Super Poser Shadow.... very fragile. -___-;

The Shadow figure there actually belongs to my best friend. She just wanted to have him posed in the pic and I figured why not. I'm not sure what model he is but he came with a little stand with his name on it and he's bendable.
Oh, and be sure to post some pics of your Reala, NiGHTS, and Jackle costumes. . I saw a cool Jackle costume at the amime convention I went to this year though sadly his cloak got a bit dirty from dragging on the ground.

Really? That's cool. I borrow my lil'sis huge Tails doll. It's now part of my collection because I bought songs and put them on her PSP. She traded me the doll for the songs, so now I have a Tails doll.... with "I love you" written on his feet with green marker..... -____-;;
Oh, I will! I just sold one of my pokemon cards for $45! The first thing that popped into my head, Jackle costume matrial! NiGHTS will be next. REALLY?!?! You went to amime convention?!?!? I'm seriously dying to go to one! But I'm only 15.... so sadly I can't go. You're soo lucky! I hope to go to one someday! Was it fun? ^___^
Poor Jackle.... I know he dearly loves that mantle!

Yeah it was pretty fun all right. I went in the Silver costume then later changed into the Cream one. Silver's head may look cool but dang it was heavy @_@ .

Man, that makes me wanna go. Maybe in a few years when I'm 18. But I'm looking forward to it! Maybe in a Jackle or NiGHTS costume. I made a Shadow costume once, and it was scary looking.... O___O;
Yeah, I saw a pic of your Silver and Cream costume and showed it to my lil'sis due to her being a Silver fan. She flipped! When I looked at your Silver head piece, I thought it looked heavy.
I was right!

How long does one of those usually take you? I always do my own character (Reni) on my pumpkin and it takes virtually all day. That's why I can't do more than one a year
And I have to do it actually ON the day of Halloween or the thin parts start to curl and not look right, if you know what I mean. I can show some of my previous attempts if you're interested.

It usually take me about 4 hours or more to do the whole process. That's not counting the breaks in-between though.

Nice tutorial.
What I do for pumpkins I need to peel away skin on is: scrape as much as I can on the inside of the pumpkin off, to make it muuuch thinner before I start any of the cutting. That way the peeled parts show threw alot better.
Sometimes I have to go threw again after carving it and carefully scrape away some more of the flesh on the inside if I think the light isn't showing threw good enough. xD
It can kill your hand sometimes though. haha
