Description Divine Power

Dungeons & Dragons supplement cover artwork.
© WOTC; D&D.

Acrylic, Approx 13" x 17".

Original artwork for sale; UK£1000.

Knowing that faith in his divinity will protect him, the Dragonborn fearlessly leaps into the mass of Eladrin Vampires...

There was a lot going on in the art brief for this piece. A host of Vampires, a tumbledown castle, Will-o-the-wisps and the Dragonborn Cleric, plus their needed to be room for the title.

To achieve some focus and punch the light is centred on the Dragonborn's holy symbol. This then sheds strong light onto the protagonists in the foreground; in turn helping them stand out clearly against the background. The symbol/light was deliberately offset to one side to provide more tension. Placing everyything very centrally can deaden an image.

We are also looking up at the leaping Dragonborn. Which when combined with his action pose helps create further drama and action.

The cloak helps accentuate the sense of flow and movement, but in the final image will mainly be obscured by the trade dress of the title. To see this, and to get further details of the product, check out this link:

That cleric I do not want to meet in a dark alley way while playing a lawful evil character....that would be the last thing I see...

I love DnD, and I do once in a while play Dragonborn. I'm a dragon fanboy, what can I say.
Anyhow, great artwork. He looks like he's about to drop the ten-ton hammer on those guys. In the name of Bahamut.

Like everything I see you do, I just love this.
The colors are marvelous, and the point of view is just something spectacular.

It's a pity the logo would cut some of it off.

Thanks very much

It is at least designed with the trade dress in mind, and it is primarily his cloak that goes.

RedToxon In reply to RalphHorsley [2009-04-12 19:05:30 +0000 UTC]

It's not a problem.

Yes but it's not fair.
How long did you work on it?
D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RalphHorsley In reply to RedToxon [2009-04-16 08:34:04 +0000 UTC]

I get paid for it - so I guess it is fair

I spent about 10 days on it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedToxon In reply to RalphHorsley [2009-04-16 08:52:59 +0000 UTC]

10 days? I can't ever work on anything that long. After seven days I get frustrated and give up (or say I am done and hide it for a few weeks).

I'm probably not good enough for commissions, but how much do you usually get paid for a piece? If you don't mind me asking.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RalphHorsley In reply to RedToxon [2009-04-19 13:06:11 +0000 UTC]

Patience is a virtue

Yeah, 10 days can seem a long time for me too, but i am used to the discipline now

For this piece I was paid US$3000, and get to keep the original.

RedToxon In reply to RalphHorsley [2009-04-19 13:31:49 +0000 UTC]

How long did it take you to get used to working for so long? =o

...and dang. That is a lot. How many commissions do you usually do a month/year?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RalphHorsley In reply to RedToxon [2009-04-20 09:22:10 +0000 UTC]

I guess it built up over time, but I have always been reasonably patient - as the detail in my owrk tends to show

That was a well paid job, most don't pay that well. Card art for Magic/WoW is US$1000 and a page of D&D art around the same. I make a good living, I am pleased to be able to say

RedToxon In reply to RalphHorsley [2009-04-20 11:56:06 +0000 UTC]

:3 I guess I'll have to follow in your example then.

You seem to be making a better living than me. D:

...and another not to annoying question(xD): Did you got school? Or were you just born talented? =o

It has taken me a while to get here, and it is not easy, but very satisfying.

I am self taught.

Wow great work! Love the composition of the picture, I'm actually gonna try and get back into D&D again. I usually always end up playing as a Dragonborn Paladin.

Nice work.
