Description Divine Power

Dungeons & Dragons supplement cover artwork.
© WOTC; D&D.

Acrylic, Approx 13" x 17".

Original artwork for sale; UK£1000.

Knowing that faith in his divinity will protect him, the Dragonborn fearlessly leaps into the mass of Eladrin Vampires...

There was a lot going on in the art brief for this piece. A host of Vampires, a tumbledown castle, Will-o-the-wisps and the Dragonborn Cleric, plus their needed to be room for the title.

To achieve some focus and punch the light is centred on the Dragonborn's holy symbol. This then sheds strong light onto the protagonists in the foreground; in turn helping them stand out clearly against the background. The symbol/light was deliberately offset to one side to provide more tension. Placing everyything very centrally can deaden an image.

We are also looking up at the leaping Dragonborn. Which when combined with his action pose helps create further drama and action.

The cloak helps accentuate the sense of flow and movement, but in the final image will mainly be obscured by the trade dress of the title. To see this, and to get further details of the product, check out this link:

I'm not familiar with D&D fantasy realm, only MtG and Forgotten Realms themes... I just wondered... are these some kind of elven vampires? They so much resemble one... in a positive way, of course, just the way I'm used to expect from you. If they're not (but I'm pretty sure they are)... well, then I'm erong, but doesn't matter, for this pic is fantastic! Excellent art, awesome details, and a great theme! Perfect.

They are Eladrin Vampires. Eladrin are a core PC race in 4e, but are very Elven-like.

very pleased you like it, thanks

Looks great Ralph. Did you use reference for the cloak or is that out of your head?

RalphHorsley In reply to evilbarny [2009-01-12 11:07:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Joe. No, no ref for the cloak. To be honest the folds could have been more interesting, but I knew the trade dress would cover it all anyway...

Cloister In reply to ??? [2009-01-09 12:20:28 +0000 UTC]

I think the background is the best part by far (especially the vampires on top of the stairs.). The foreground details are too evenly split up (same size, same importance) for my old eyes to cope with. And the center of attention goes to the cleric's belly...
Good work though! Interesting brief challenge.
Keep it up Ralph! It is inspiring.. and I can never resist being impressed by people doing fantasy illustration in acrylics. I know the medium well... These kind of images must take you a while...

I admire your skill in putting many characters and detail on an image without making it look messy at all. and as a cover with the dragonborn's head in front of the title, the piece looks even more dynamic

ps: you have a little problem with the "= p" in the link, try using the html code "a href"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RalphHorsley In reply to patmax17 [2009-01-09 10:20:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Glad you feel I managed to pull all the elements together.

Yeah, I couldn't work out how to fix the link. Could you please show me what the link should be, I am not sure how you mean to incorporate the "a href" - much appreciated.

patmax17 In reply to RalphHorsley [2009-01-09 12:12:07 +0000 UTC]

there's a problem: if I put the code for the link here it will be turned into a link, and you won't see it

ok, maybe this could do it:
[link]

the mywebpage.html would be the link you put in the comments, while My Web Page would be the words you want the readers to see (in deviantart it usually is [link])

RalphHorsley In reply to patmax17 [2009-01-12 11:04:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much for the link to the HTML tutorial. I tried to alter the link, and have messed around trying different combos, but still can't seem to get it right. It is now broken a different way! I am not very tech minded, and must confess to having hit a dead end.

Thanks for your help, but sadly I haven't manage to get it right

patmax17 In reply to RalphHorsley [2009-01-12 14:44:12 +0000 UTC]

ok, let me try it this way:
go here: [link]

And just copy and paste the code. Sorry if I make you go on another site, but it's the only way I could think of for writing an html code without having the browser actually translating it into a link ^^'

RalphHorsley In reply to patmax17 [2009-01-12 15:08:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks again for your help, the only difference I had was A HREF in caps. However depite cutting and pasting your own link it still isn't right! I have left it as is, so that you can see what is thrown up. This is the same problem I came up against myself...

Thanks again for your help, and I certainly didn't mind going to another site. Indeed I have now bookmarked the tutorial link you gave me.

patmax17 In reply to RalphHorsley [2009-01-12 15:23:52 +0000 UTC]

tou're welcome ^^

the problem is, DA sees that there is a "= P" in your url, and turns it into an emote. Looking at the source code I see that before "Divine Power" there should be a > that isn't there (the last part of the code should read >Divine Power

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RalphHorsley In reply to patmax17 [2009-01-12 18:40:43 +0000 UTC]

I understand that it is the "" which is the problemmatic part...

It does read correctly - namely >Divine Power
I did a direct 'cut&aste' of your link, which incidnetally was what I had deduced from the html tutorial. Clearly DA is one fussy host

Thanks for all your help.

patmax17 In reply to RalphHorsley [2009-01-12 19:09:23 +0000 UTC]

ok, then here we go with my last idea:
[link]

put the address (no the code) here, and copy the "short" link into the comments... I hope tinyurl won't generate any url containing emote-codes ^^'

Yes, please note me with your address, and say whether you would prefer a sketch on a white-back, or a print, and if there is any particular image/card you would like (please bear in mind that I cannot offer prints of any Games Workshop imagery). Thanks again.
