Was the bravery foolhardiness, or would this hero triumph where others had failed...?
The 'Red Box' holds a legendary place in Dungeons & Dragons lore. It was one of the original introductory starter packs, featuring iconic artwork by Larry Elmore, and was a portal through which many gamers entered the hobby.
You can imagine how thrilled I was to hear that Wizards of the Coast were going to revisit that product, and that they would like me to do likewise with the artwork. The look of the D&D red dragon has changed in the intervening period, as has the appearance of the heroes, but I wanted to capture the feel of the original, and pay homage in my own way.
Larry's original image, and details of the product, can be found on my blog:

This is one of those "OH, SHIT" moments that defines whether you're a stationary piece of meat or fast food "Nana Nana boo boo you can't catch me!"

I can certainly see the homage in your compositional choices. The colours you've chosen are apt, especially the blue backlighting on the dragon, which is very striking indeed.

Oh my freakin' god. You got the new Red Box cover? Dude, I doubt you remember it, but I once (or more) said you were worthy of Elmore and Easley, and look at this - you got the Red Box cover of a new generation. Congrats, man. You deserve it with all the fantastic pieces you've done.
Oh, and this *is* a piece worthy of the cover!

I just love the image. Can take my eyes of it. All the energy and flow of it. Both characters got in mid action. The careful close look for details that reveal things about both of them. The dragons is unbelievably strong, with scales marked by the triumph of many battle against many heros along the years. You're about a few artist how does pay closer attention to how membrane wing actually are. They are lightly transparent, enough see-through to see the veins in it, yet sturdy enough to take flight such a massive body.
The fighter on the other hand is a little harder to read. On the one hand you don't see he's face, so unconsciously he represent all the adventurers who ever had to face unsurmountable obstacles and yet prevail. Basically what D&D is all about. On the other hand, analyzing him you can see the he is either an elf or half-elf with polish to brand new set of armor and sword, so he prepared for the encounter before hand. All the usual gearing set a side, I don't see how he can win. For starters, his left foot is about to go loose by the crumbling rock he is standing on. Secondly, he is at it alone. If he had any company, he would had gone forward with a two-handed weapon or else he wouldn't do so much emphasis on protection over damage.
Other then the quijoteque (Don Quijote) sense of imposible realisation, I really commend you for such an excellent piece of art.
