Was the bravery foolhardiness, or would this hero triumph where others had failed...?
The 'Red Box' holds a legendary place in Dungeons & Dragons lore. It was one of the original introductory starter packs, featuring iconic artwork by Larry Elmore, and was a portal through which many gamers entered the hobby.
You can imagine how thrilled I was to hear that Wizards of the Coast were going to revisit that product, and that they would like me to do likewise with the artwork. The look of the D&D red dragon has changed in the intervening period, as has the appearance of the heroes, but I wanted to capture the feel of the original, and pay homage in my own way.
Larry's original image, and details of the product, can be found on my blog:

You did an amazing job by giving the adventurer all the items he needs/has found or bought end but not making him look over encumbered. Just awesome.

I don't know why people keep coming back to the fact that this is not digital. No matter in what medium art is made, it is the mind, eye and hand of the artist that make the art. Tools are different, and all have their advantages and disadvantages, but all have the potential for great art.
What amazes me here is what you THOUGHT of and realized: the colors, the textures that make the stone and the skin of the dragon so palpable. Beginners and bad artists tend to forget that color is not a flat surface but a living thing. You haven't put color on a canvas here. You have slayed an imaginary lizard and streched its cured skin over your wedge frame.
That is, I have to admit, what I missed in Elmore and most of the other D&D artists but admired in Parkinson: the mastery of color in the surface detail. And that is what I find again in your art and why I love it so much.

I agree, it is just a medium, but glad you like the end result

Sooo much to look at! The first thing that caught my eye today was the beautiful blue lighting you did, really brings out the dragon. Then I noticed all the details in the fighter's get up, look at all the bits and pieces of equipment! Great homage hon, you've made it your own
