Was the bravery foolhardiness, or would this hero triumph where others had failed...?
The 'Red Box' holds a legendary place in Dungeons & Dragons lore. It was one of the original introductory starter packs, featuring iconic artwork by Larry Elmore, and was a portal through which many gamers entered the hobby.
You can imagine how thrilled I was to hear that Wizards of the Coast were going to revisit that product, and that they would like me to do likewise with the artwork. The look of the D&D red dragon has changed in the intervening period, as has the appearance of the heroes, but I wanted to capture the feel of the original, and pay homage in my own way.
Larry's original image, and details of the product, can be found on my blog:

I see most of the people are betting on the awesome dragon. I'll put mine on the character with the sword, if I recall right D&D has this amazing way of making unlikely thing happening like that there sword just so happens to slash the dragon in just the right spot (yep that can be the claw even) and its magical properties(which can negate the awesome dragon's magical resistance properties) causes the awesome dragon to simply roll over and die. All decided by the roll of a dice. Besides it would have to be some epic level character to go at the dragon as brave as that guy like that.
As for the painting it is simply awesome. Gets me all excited to work on my thesis painting which ironically has nothing to do with fantasy at all... what with it being historical and all. Anyway thanks for making such an inspiring piece.

True, he would be running if he didn't know something we don't!

You really managed to capture the feeling of the original, but your own design is well represented too. The character is going in with a good equipment load, not too much but not too little, and I'm glad to see this because equipment is underrepresented and unseen way too often (I'm guilty of it in my own sketches and when I look at it I think to myself "something's missing"). You've captured the feel of movement on the elven fighter's part, as if he had just dodged a tail lashing and is moving again toward his objective. The angle you used makes the dragon seem even more imposing and towering than the original (another thing you've done very well). Great job overall. I'm a classicist, I like my D&D second edition, but you've really done a great job with the art in 4th and you make it tough to resist buying for the art and story alone.

I can't believe that you can do that with acrylics, it's so wonderful! o_o I thought it was digital at first, so I find it amazing to have such a good rendering with acrylics.
Well done!

An epic Game book yes.
The dragon muscle reminds me of Easley and the, the position of the fighter and the lair reminds me of Elmore, and the face of the warrior reminds me of Holloway.
Nice job
