Description
General of Undeath.Acrylic, approx 8" x 11"
Β©Wizards of the Coast; Internal illustration for D&D Spell Compendium.
Original artwork sold.
This image shows a general leading an army of undead into battle. She has summoned a vicious horde that covers the whole spectrum - from lowly Skeleton to mighty Vampire.
This is a vignetted image, but I dropped in a box frame to enable me to show the receding ranks and night sky more easily. This then meant that I could have figures coming out of the framed area which in turn helps make them more dramatic.

The construction of your painting is so effective and it does enhance the 'charging' of the figures. Wonderful intricate work on the armour and very textured. I like the whole atmosphere of the piece and especially the moon in the background which adds so much to it.

Thanks for your comments. I am glad you feel it all pulls together. I do wonder now whether I could have pulled the camera angle down more. This would make the figures more powerful, but you would lose some of the depth of field.

It would have given them a more imposing look, you're right, but you would have definitely lost some of the background work. I can understand your thoughts on this though. It would have been a completely different painting. Anyway, it does have an huge impact as it is. Maybe you can use that idea for another painting down the line.

I do try and vary the approach with my compositions, otherwise I worry that everything might begin to look 'samey'.

Well, that's certainly a good thing. Whilst you have your overriding style, I believe that you have achieved your goal from the paintings I have seen. They're not samey in my opinion and each have their own stories to tell.

Glad you feel I manage to show enough variety in my approach. I would hate to get stale and repetitive. Thanks.

Um, I think she's holding a weapon usually assiociated with Pelor. Trying to fool the enemy?
