Description
Tomb of HorrorsDungeons & Dragons supplement cover artwork.
© WOTC; D&D.
Acrylic, Approx 13" x 17".
Original artwork for sale; UK£1700.
He fought relentlessly even as he was being dragged to the planes of hell.
This was a challenging image to work on, as a montage was requested showing some iconic features from the original games supplement: The Gargoyle, Paladin, Gaping Maw and red-eyed lich skull in the background.
The lich skull proved a useful device to set symmetrically on the background of the page, with the eyes helping provide a focal point, whilst the other elements could float freely.
The main drama and interest is provided by the falling battle between the Gargoyle and Paladin, with the red rim light helping to pick them out and unify the whole picture.
The pciture can be seen on the supplement cover here:

Another winner in here.
The gargoyle and the paladin look awesome, but the demi-lich is beyond badass.
It must be an honour making the cover of such an iconic adventure.

That's fascinating! How long does a piece this large and involved usually take you?

Thanks! Someone actually working in real media is so unusual here, that the process is fascinating - and the results obviously work!

Wonderful work and it takes me back to the times of some grand adventures playing D&D with my friends. I started in the late seventies with the basic boxed set and I still play occasionally with some close friends. I have always loved the artwork used in the manuals and handbooks. It is good to see someone of your talent continuing the tradition of grand fantasy artwork.

Thanks. I started playing around the same time, and if it weren't for D&D I doubt I'd be an illustrator today.

Wow fantastic image i love how you handled it. The cape flowing through the wings is my favorite. Great action, and motion. Pure to the core D&D art.
Well Done!!

Oh man, the original tomb of horrors was so player-killingly awesome, I can't wait to see how they updated it for 4e. I hope the sphere of annihilation is still in the statue's mouth. Apparently that was Gygax's favorite part!
