Description
I've got to apologize again for being so slow about responding to my messages. I opened my account just now - 98 messages! I'll try to get caught up when I get up in the morning. But I just had to post this one. I just finished this yesterday, and I really took my time on it. It's a commissioned work, watercolour, 8" by 10". I'm really quite proud of it. It's meant as a gift for someone, but I think the chances of the recipient finding it here before the gift date are pretty slim.
This is for someone in DA, so if she'd rather I remove it, I'll be happy to.

Thank you so much. Most people who order portraits want dignified sitting-up poses, but I think the best paintings are ones where the cats are behaving more like cats.

I so envy people who CAN paint with watercolours the way it should be done, because for example, the fur here looks thick but smooth and the shading looks amazing too!

Thanks very much! I guess it's mainly a matter of practice - deciding what techniques and brushes work best. I do so wish I were a little more imaginative, though. I really appreciate the thoughtful comment!

youΒ΄re welcome. And youΒ΄re right about practising and using different techniques Even itΒ΄s sometimes amusing not to remain on only one but keep on trying different ones in case something really phenomenal come out of the

I simply love your cat paintings, Chris! I adore the print you gave me of one of your painted cats...This is indeed a beautiful painting and a great compliment to the print I have! Is it possibly the same cat? The cat laying on it's back in the sun?

Similar markings but different cats, I'm afraid. Good eye, though! Thank you so much - I was pretty pleased with that one. My printer doesn't like it. It keeps wanting to print it out too light. D:

Great detail, I love the effect of the lighting making some part stand out more than the others. It definitely has a calming emotion too it.

Very nice. I love how you did the pressure lines form the cat into the sheet. And the head also, great eye positioning and it's not totally round as mine are.

Wow! Thank you very much! I find fabrics pretty difficult - almost as difficult as ears or glass, so I really appreciate the kind words. The hardest part is in recognizing the depth of the shadows in the fabrics; if I can make those shadows look reasonably good, the rest isn't too hard. Eyes come pretty easy for me - I practice them all the time because I think that's what people tend to look at first. If the eyes are good, other little things don't seem to matter quite as much!

Its so cute~
I like how you did the brown background.. it looks like it's of leather or felt or something..?
π: 0 β©: 1
RamonaQ In reply to Cool-Vin [2007-04-13 08:16:23 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! Actually, I tried at first to do the background as it appeared in the photo, and it looked unbelievably stupid! So I washed over it and just covered it in sepia with a lot of paint on a big fat brush. It spreads out and does what it wants to do, usually to pretty nice effect. I think the texture in the paper helps these fuzzy backgrounds.
Yeah, poor Ramona! Lots of messages because I was paying attention to Ancient for a couple of days. The thing is, Ramona gets all the commission work - I need to remember to check the account more often!
