Description Myes. Trying to give a shot not at Inktober, because I'm slow as hell at drawing, so I'm going to annoy you with pre-drawn pictures of imps for the whole month.
Starting with the striped imp. It's one of the most widely-distributed species that inhabits a lot temperate environments, ranging from boreal to mediterranean climates. Like most imp species they can be found predominantly in forests, with only a few cultures living in open spaces. They are also notable for their presence in elven and mixed cities to a larger degree than the others. Striped imps are the largest species of the umbra group.
A trait present in most imps are the gliding membranes on the limbs and the tail fan; aside from gliding, they are also used to slow down falls, nonverbal communication (both intra- and interspecific) and regulation of temperature. All imp species possess signal spots on the underside of their tail feathers, which are used to give silent signals to others when foraging, with each culture having an unique signal code additionally to their spoken language. Due to their size and their not very extensive membranes, striped imps are not one of the better gliders.

Wait... Are imps sentient!? if so that's awesome!

Sapient, but yes. The reference sheet for them mentioned there are some cultures at medieval level around.

That's pretty highly-advanced considering the competition from humans and whatever else lives in this world.

And, would this world be like Ratha's creature? The imps eventually die off and leave the land to humans? Like the cats did in the Named books? (at least I think that happened...)

They do compete with humans, but those in turn are being kept in check by the elves, which see themselves as stewards of the world. And the higher-developed cultures tend to be in very rocky areas which aren't all that attractive for humans to settle.

And I take it Elves are simply a mutation/offshoot of the homo genus?

Not at all, actually. While they can magically disguise themselves as somewhat uncanny-looking humans, their real shape is somewhat centaur-like and combines features of vertebrates, arthropods and several other animal phyla. They don't have an evolutionary history, but were created by means of magic aeons ago.

What in the name of f*ck?

So they're like... Semi-mammalian Dwayne Johnsons in Scorpion King?

Jesus, you need to draw these things!

Way more blended, and rather semi-vertebrate.

They're still in the concept stage (they were hit with quite a case of the redesigns), but right now, they have backswept, finned antennae (roughly resembling the pointy ears of a regular elf), four eyes (pair lens eyes, pair compound eyes), plated palps held over the face like a mask, four arms and a variable number of walking legs, depending on species, with elves sensu stricto having six.

 THEY SOUND LIKE LIVING NIGHTMARES.

Or something from Avatar. Not much difference.

They're pretty weird (and probably scary, too, as they are the only race capable of freely using magic), but that's what they use their glamour for.

I saw you say they could shapeshift. And MAGIC!?

This world just gets weirder.... I love it!

I was probably phrasing it badly. What I meant is that elves can create an illusion around themselves to appear differently; their human illusion usually involves some kind of train that indicates where their made-invisible hind body is. I'm not sure about shapeshifting yet; it would be a very powerful kind of magic and it's pretty much possible it's a one-way road, as in one can never truly return to their old self when using it.
Yes, there is magic. Behind all the more unusual designs of the usual races there's still a pretty standard fantasy setting.

Interesting. It looks rougher than your normal work, but not bad at all.

Ramul In reply to Akernis [2016-10-01 09:00:53 +0000 UTC]

The reason for the roughness is the work size (A6) and the crap ballpoint pen I used. The ones later to come are better.

I suppose it will get better, as the pen I used was kind of crap.

I can, as they are all drawn by now. As said, my drawing speed is nothing to look at.
