Description

At the start of time, when the earth had no shape, Upa and Atua travelled the lands. With no beginning or goal in their paths, they grew tired and laid down. As their heavy bodies were set on the ground, it crinkled and bent into hills and valleys. Sun and moon passed over them as they rested. The sun's light broke in Upa's half-closed eyes and split into rays that gave measures to the world. The moon's light broke in Atua's closed eyes and poured out as bright water, filling the lands with snaking rivers. After recovering, Upa and Atua rose, now seeing the earth having gained shape. Following the rivers, using the hills and valleys as landmarks and measuring the distances with light, they were able to return to their home.
