Description

Gravers are among the largest flying makropneumonopteres and fill a similar niche to vultures. The can be found in almost any open environment of the Northern and Western Continent, particularly in midgardroot savannahs and montane areas, where they can easily glide for long distances to seek for carrion. Their wings have a large surface area, their eyes are directed downwards and overhung by heavy brows. The lip teeth consist of a row of long, hook-like teeth to pull soft flesh from the carcass, and several ropes of flat, rasp-like teeth to clean any remaining pieces of meat from the bones. The jaw teeth are often reduced, but especially the larger species like the imperial graver have flat jaw teeth that allow them to crush bone. Gravers feed their young with a nutritional fluid they produce in the atrium of their spiracles. Once weaned, the young gravers leave their nests and live as active predators, gradually switching to scavening while they mature.

You've been doing an awesome job with all of yourΒ pneumonopteres here . Is this one the the only species in its genus?

another amazing illustration and species description! just a question about the little bump on the top of the head, do these creatures have a third eye or what is going on?

Yes, it's the median eye. Most flying species have them.

Yes, most entries show it from an unfortunate angle, but the barklings have it well-visible. Its function ranges from as good as the lateral eyes to less, as its main function is to spot predators from above. A notable exception is the lanterneye (not uploaded yet), where the median eye is the main eye.
